Nong Kaem Eats Oshine Chiang Rai 2019: A flavor you must experience from the heart of Northern Thailand
Chiang Rai, a city I, mr.hotsia, often visit, is not only famous for its beautiful nature or the world-renowned Wat Rong Khun, but also a city full of delicious food, warm lifestyles, and uniquely charming markets. On this 2019 trip, I had the chance to follow Nong Kaem to try “Oshine,” a local restaurant that many might not know well yet, but I can tell you this flavor is worth sharing.
Oshine is located in downtown Chiang Rai, not far fromChiang Rai Clock Towerwhere I usually stay near Sooknirund Hotel, an old hotel that is affordable and comfortable (read more atAffordable and Good Hotels in Chiang Rai City). Getting to Oshine is very easy because it is in an area frequented by both locals and tourists.
Simple yet extraordinary flavors
Nong Kaem and I started by ordering the signature dish of this restaurant, the braised beef basil. The beef was tender and melted in the mouth. The basil sauce had just the right spicy kick—not too hot but perfectly balanced with herbs and spices. I must say, if you like bold Thai flavors, you must not miss this dish. (If interested, I have also written about the braised beef basil at Roy Han restaurant. See theUltimate Braised Beef Basil Video)
Besides the basil dish, Nong Kaem also ordered Oshine fried rice, fragrant with the aroma of the wok that deserved a thumbs up. The rice grains were beautiful and not greasy, with fresh ingredients like eggs, vegetables, and carefully selected meats. What impressed me was the unique flavor that truly reflected the authentic taste of Chiang Rai.
Atmosphere and friendliness of the people
Oshine is not only about great taste. The food here is served in a warm atmosphere. The people in the restaurant are very friendly. Nong Kaem exchanged conversations with the owner, who shared about the careful selection of ingredients and cooking methods. Although a small restaurant, their dedication is evident in every dish served.
While waiting for the food, I also enjoyed watching the lifestyle of Chiang Rai people passing by, including tourists and locals. This place seems to gather the diversity of Chiang Rai in one spot, which made me feel even more the vibrancy of this city.
Connecting with other charms of Chiang Rai
After a satisfying meal, I recommend travelers like you to take a stroll around Chiang Rai city in the evening atSaturday Walking Street “Kad Chiang Rai Ram Luek”Or if you want to experience an equally beautiful temple, don’t missWat Rong Khunwhich is the artwork of Ajarn Chalermchai Kositpipat. I have visited and found it both beautiful and deeply meaningful.
If you have more time, I recommend driving to Doi Chang, not far from the city (Driving Trip to Doi Chang) where you can enjoy beautiful views and learn about the famous coffee cultivation of Chiang Rai.
Travel tips
If you plan to stay in Chiang Rai, I, mr.hotsia, recommend booking accommodation in the city center near the Clock Tower, such as Sooknirund Hotel, where I have stayed and was impressed. Or if you want a bit more comfort, consider mid-range hotels like Wiang Inn or Inkam.
For getting to Oshine, I suggest using a private car or taxi for convenience and to avoid rushing. But if you arrive in Chiang Rai on a Saturday evening, don’t forget to visit the walking street. I guarantee you will experience both the flavors and lifestyle of Chiang Rai fully.
Summary of impressions
Oshine Chiang Rai is not just an ordinary restaurant; it is an experience I, mr.hotsia, want everyone to try. Chiang Rai is known by many for Wat Rong Khun, the Clock Tower, or Doi Chang, but here is another side of Chiang Rai full of warmth and distinctive flavors. If you come to Chiang Rai, don’t forget to stop by and taste the food here, and you will surely love Chiang Rai as much as I do.
