Unseen Chiang Khong 3/13: Mekong River Fish at Chiang Khong Morning Market

Chiang Khong, Chiang Rai Province, a border town many may only think of as a crossing point to Laos. But for me, mr.hotsia, Chiang Khong has much more to offer than you might expect, especially the Chiang Khong morning market which is the charm of riverside life. Here I found “Mekong River Fish,” one of the local food and cultural symbols that I don’t want you to miss when visiting Chiang Khong.

Early morning at Chiang Khong market is unlike anywhere else in Chiang Rai. I followed the scent of fish and the chatter of vendors. Locals bring fresh Mekong River fish from the Mekong River to sell before dawn. Snakehead fish, carp, catfish, silver barb, and other fish hard to find in big cities. These Mekong River fish are not just food but life and culture tied to the Mekong River.

I tried Mekong River fish prepared as fried fish, steamed fish, or even raw fish fermented in the northern style called “pla ra.” The flavor is rich, fresh, and carries the essence of the Mekong River flowing through the border. Besides fish, the morning market also offers other local foods like sticky rice with grilled pork, northern chili dip, and seasonal fruits. I, mr.hotsia, recommend you stroll around in the morning atmosphere and don’t forget to order a plate of Mekong River fish—you’ll surely love it.

Riverside Life and the Spirit of Chiang Khong

Chiang Khong is not just about the fish market. I once stayed in Chiang Rai city, not far from Chiang Khong (if you’re interested in affordable and good accommodation in Chiang Rai city, check out my reviewAffordable and Good Hotels in Chiang Rai City). The trip from Chiang Rai to Chiang Khong takes about 2 hours, but you will experience more peace and nature than in the big city.

In Chiang Khong, you will see locals relying mainly on the Mekong River for fishing, trading, and traveling by boat. The riverside morning market is the center of daily life unlike anywhere else. I, mr.hotsia, enjoy watching people meet, shop, chat, and exchange news. You can feel the warmth and simplicity that is rare in today’s world.

Travel and Must-Do Activities Near Chiang Khong

After enjoying Mekong River fish and local food at the morning market, Chiang Khong is also a starting point for exploring interesting nature and culture, such as a boat trip to watch the sunrise on the Mekong River or crossing to the Laos side to experience a different lifestyle up close.

For those who want a full day trip, I recommend driving the scenic routes around Chiang Khong, where you will find hill tribe villages and coffee plantations, similar to what I shared inDriving Tour of Doi ChangSeeing coffee farming and the lifestyles of various hill tribes makes this trip even more complete.

Connecting Experiences in Chiang Rai and Chiang Khong

If you plan to visit Chiang Rai, don’t forget to stop byWat Rong Khun (White Temple)which is not far from Chiang Rai city and a must-visit destination for tourists worldwide. I, mr.hotsia, have said before that Wat Rong Khun is not just a beautiful photo spot but also a profound lesson in art and life philosophy.

If you come to Chiang Rai in the evening, try strolling through the market and walking street as I described inStrolling in Chiang Rai CityOr if you want to relax with a cup of coffee, I recommendYellow Bus Coffee, Clock Tower, Chiang Rai Citywhich is another favorite place of mine, mr.hotsia, to spend time thinking and truly experiencing the atmosphere of Chiang Rai.

Summary of the Mekong River Fish Experience at Chiang Khong Morning Market

The Chiang Khong morning market with Mekong River fish is not just an ordinary market but a reflection of riverside life that preserves the naturalness and sincerity of the local people. I, mr.hotsia, recommend that if you come to Chiang Rai, set aside a morning to stroll, taste the fish, and experience the local morning market atmosphere at Chiang Khong.

This is another overlooked side of Chiang Rai, but for me, it is the true unseen gem of Northern Thailand.
