Chiang Saen, the ancient riverside city by the Mekong that mr.hotsia must experience personally

When talking about Chiang Rai, many people probably think of Chiang Rai city withaffordable and good hotels in Chiang Rai cityor the world-famous Wat Rong Khun. But for mr.hotsia, “Chiang Saen” offers a different charm that must be experienced firsthand. The first feeling upon arriving in Chiang Saen is the peacefulness and the riverside town atmosphere by the Mekong, still full of historical stories and the simple lifestyle of local people.

I traveled from Chiang Rai city by car, taking about an hour and a half. The route to Chiang Saen passes through green rice fields and small mountains on both sides. As soon as I entered Chiang Saen, I saw the Mekong River stretching far into the horizon. The slow-flowing water seemed to tell me the long history of this town.

Chiang Saen and its Long History

Chiang Saen was once an ancient and important Lanna kingdom before becoming the tourist town many know today. In the old town of Chiang Saen, there are ruins of the ancient city to explore, including old city walls and ancient temples scattered around. Here I strolled slowly, observing the local lifestyle where people still farm and trade traditionally. The morning market in Chiang Saen is not large but offers local products such as fresh vegetables, seasonal fruits, and local dishes. My favorite is hot steamed sticky rice served with spicy grilled fish chili paste.

If anyone has ever beenwalking around Chiang Rai cityyou will notice the difference that Chiang Saen is more rural and peaceful but has the charming small-town vibe that I like.

Boat Tour Along the Mekong

Another highlight of Chiang Saen that mr.hotsia doesn’t want you to miss is the boat tour along the Mekong River. I chose to take the boat in the evening as the sun was setting, casting golden light reflecting on the water surface. The atmosphere was peaceful with sounds of water birds and slow rowing. I saw the Laos side across the river, small sandy beaches, and fishing villages along the shore.

The boat tour here is not just about sightseeing but also an opportunity to talk directly with the local boatmen, hearing stories about riverside life, fishing, and local traditions that are still preserved today.

Local Chiang Saen Food That mr.hotsia Recommends Trying

Chiang Saen offers more than nature and history. The local food here is another charm that mr.hotsia can’t resist. I tried “Kaeng Hang Lay,” a rich and spicy curry with tender large pieces of pork that melt in your mouth, and “Nam Prik Noom” served with fresh locally grown vegetables. There are also snacks like crispy rice crackers topped with savory toppings and delicious sticky rice with coconut milk.

For those who want easy meals, I recommend the Chiang Saen morning market, which has a variety of local food stalls, including small coffee shops serving aromatic local coffee that energizes your city exploration.

Nearby Interesting Stops

After exploring Chiang Saen, I recommend driving to nearby attractions such asDoi Changfamous for its delicious coffee and beautiful views. Or if you want to return to Chiang Rai city, you can stop byWat Rong Khunthe famous and stunning white temple.

For accommodation, if you visit Chiang Rai, I have written recommendations in the articleAffordable and Good Hotels in Chiang Rai Citywhich is not far from the Chiang Rai Clock Tower. There are various accommodation options ranging from budget to luxury, convenient for traveling around Chiang Rai city or heading to Chiang Saen.

Travel Tips from mr.hotsia

If you don’t have a private car, you can take a songthaew or van from Chiang Rai city to Chiang Saen conveniently, taking less than two hours. For those who like to drive themselves, this route is easy and offers beautiful scenery. I recommend allowing enough time to travel and explore fully because Chiang Saen’s charm needs to be slowly experienced.

Before leaving, don’t forget to buy local coffee or souvenirs from the locals. Here you can find fresh coffee from Doi Chang and small handicrafts, which make impressive gifts with great stories to share when you return home.

mr.hotsia’s Impressions of Chiang Saen

Chiang Saen is not just a beautiful small town by the Mekong but is also full of stories and an interesting lifestyle beyond expectations. I like it here because I get to experience traditional Thai culture, stroll slowly through the old town, and take a peaceful boat ride along the Mekong River. This is Chiang Saen as mr.hotsia wants to share and encourage everyone to visit and experience themselves.

For anyone planning to visit Chiang Rai, don’t forget to stop by the old town of Chiang Saen, which will enrich your Northern Thailand travel experience impressively.
