Holland Papaya Chiang Rai: Fresh Sweetness from the North

When talking about Chiang Rai, besides the famous Wat Rong Khun and Doi Chang coffee that everyone wants to try, I, mr.hotsia, would like to invite everyone to discover another local gem that many might not know yet — the “Holland Papaya,” widely cultivated in Chiang Rai province itself.

The last time I had the chance to travel to Chiang Rai, I intended to experience the lifestyle and freshness of this cold-climate fruit firsthand. From the city center where I stayed nearChiang Rai Clock Towerwhich is a convenient central point for travelers like me, I drove northeast out of the city not far to visit the Holland Papaya plantations grown on highlands with cool weather all year round, perfect for cultivating such exotic fruits.

Why is it called Holland Papaya?

The name “Holland” might make many think this papaya variety comes from Europe, but in fact, it’s a name used to indicate the sweetness and firm texture comparable to fruits from Holland. The Holland Papaya here has a dense flesh, yellow-orange color, and a slightly sweet and tangy taste when fully ripe. It’s perfect for eating fresh or making papaya salad and local desserts, which I personally tried and found absolutely delightful.

I walked through the papaya garden while chatting with local farmers growing Holland Papaya. It was clear that the community takes great care and pride in their produce. They shared that cultivating this papaya requires meticulous care, including watering, pest control, and pruning to ensure high-quality fruit with unmatched flavor.

Markets and Lifestyle with Holland Papaya

After visiting the papaya garden, I didn’t miss the chance to visit a fresh market in Chiang Rai city where fresh Holland Papayas were bustlingly sold. The market is another charm of Chiang Rai. I stopped by a morning market near my hotel, which is not far fromChiang Rai Walking StreetHere, they sell fruits, fresh vegetables, and local foods. I tried a rustic papaya salad with a bold spicy flavor combined with the sweetness of Holland Papaya, which made me feel like tasting the true flavor of Chiang Rai.

Besides food and fruits, the market atmosphere was lively with locals shopping joyfully. There was also a local coffee shop where I stopped to rest and enjoy the aromatic Doi Chang coffee before heading back to Suknirand Hotel where I stayed near the Chiang Rai Clock Tower, a convenient spot for both tourists and locals.Suknirand HotelAffordable prices and a pleasant atmosphere, perfect for travelers who want to explore Chiang Rai on a budget.

Easy Travel and Connection in Chiang Rai

If you come to Chiang Rai and want to try fresh Holland Papaya, I recommend renting a car to drive out of the city to the surrounding districts or choose to travel along the Doi Chang route, famous for its coffee and beautiful nature.Driving Tour of Doi Changis a great option because the route is not far and you can stop to visit several attractions, such as the famous Wat Rong Khun, which I have written about in this article.Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple of Chiang Rai

For those who enjoy evening strolls in Chiang Rai city, don’t forget to visitChiang Rai Clock Towerwhich features light and sound shows in the evening. If it’s a Saturday, try the food at “Kad Chiang Rai Ram Luek,” a walking street full of local foods and handicrafts from villagers. It’s a perfect way to end a Chiang Rai trip filled with culture, nature, and flavors.
