Unseen Travel in Chiang Rai, Mr. Hotsia Style

Chiang Rai, a northern city well known as a popular destination for nature and culture travelers. But for me, Mr. Hotsia, this visit to Chiang Rai is not just about checking in at the usual landmarks. I will take you on an unseen journey filled with the essence of real life, local ways, and must-try flavors that you should experience at least once in your life.

Starting in Chiang Rai city, affordable and good accommodation

If you come to Chiang Rai like me, I recommend staying in the city center because it’s convenient for travel and truly experiencing community life. I chose to stay atSuknirand Hotellocated next to the Chiang Rai Clock Tower, with a very cheap price of only 350 baht for a fan room. If you want an air-conditioned room, it’s not much more expensive—I once negotiated it down to just 500 baht. This hotel is close to the morning market, evening market, and the Saturday walking street “Kad Chiang Rai Ram Luek,” where you can stroll leisurely to see local products, traditional food, and Chiang Rai’s art.

If you like sitting in coffee shops, there is a yellow truck coffee shop next to the hotel where I enjoy sipping strong black coffee while watching people pass by. Crossing the street, you’ll find famous curry rice shops like Ratchaburi and Phetchaburi, where I often stop for a simple but hearty breakfast or late meal with authentic local flavors.

Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple of Chiang Rai

If anyone comes to Chiang Rai without visitingWat Rong Khunalso known as the White Temple, I think it’s like not really arriving in Chiang Rai. This temple is not only beautiful but also full of deep meaning and art that beautifully reflects the lifestyle and thoughts of northern people. Chalermchai Kositpipat, the artist who created this temple, is someone I have followed for a long time. Wat Rong Khun is more than just a temple; it’s an open-air museum attracting both Thai and international visitors.

On the day I visited, tourists from all over the world were enthusiastically admiring the temple—Chinese, Westerners, Thais, and people of various ethnicities. There are staff providing explanations and maintaining order in multiple languages. I want everyone to see this temple not just as a beautiful photo spot but as a life lesson that makes us reflect on goodness and the importance of preserving Thai culture.

Climbing Doi Pha Tang for a unique beautiful view

One experience not to miss for nature lovers and mountain enthusiasts is climbing Doi Pha Tang, located not far from Chiang Rai city. My friend, a skilled soldier, and I experienced the atmosphere here during a 4-night trip in Chiang Rai and 2 more nights in Don Chiang Khong.

Doi Pha Tang offers panoramic views of the Mekong River flowing through the lowlands below. Additionally, we experienced the lifestyle of the Akha people at Ban Amu (Ban Apa Pattana), where we shared a meal together. This was a very impressive moment for me because I deeply learned about the culture of this indigenous tribe while tasting local dishes prepared with great care in every step.

Mae Suai Wet Rafting and Doi Chang Coffee

After visiting Doi Pha Tang, my team and I continued to Mae Suai to experience wet rafting on the river. This place is very natural, with clear cool water and the shady atmosphere of the forest and mountains. When I went, it was the rainy season, allowing me to see the lush green forest and coffee plantations surrounding the area.

Speaking of Doi Chang coffee, which is nationally famous, I drove up to visit the coffee plantations on Doi Chang following the advice inthe article about driving to Doi ChangThe route up Doi Chang is not difficult but requires caution because some roads are narrow and winding. Here, the Akha and Lisu hill tribes live simply and grow coffee as their main occupation. I observed the coffee cultivation process from planting to harvesting and tasted freshly brewed coffee with a rich, unique flavor.

Chiang Rai Clock Tower and Walking Street

Back in Chiang Rai city, I recommend taking a stroll atChiang Rai Clock Towerwhich is not just an ordinary clock tower. Every night at 7 PM, 8 PM, and 9 PM, there is a light and sound show designed by Chalermchai, the creator of Wat Rong Khun, adding life and charm to the old town atmosphere.

Not far from this clock tower, I also enjoy walking atthe Saturday Walking Street “Kad Chiang Rai Ram Luek”which is full of handmade products, local food, and cultural art performances that beautifully connect the community and tourists. For those coming on Sunday, there is another lively walking street full of colors and fun activities.

Delicious local food in Chiang Rai

Speaking of Chiang Rai, you must not miss the great local eateries I like to visit in town, such asRoy Hanwhich serves intensely flavored braised beef basil, or tryP. Duck Noodle, San Khi Baowith its rich duck noodle soup that you must not miss. I believe tasting these local dishes opens up experiences and helps understand the lifestyle of Chiang Rai people better.

Whether it’s the pork leg with steamed bun I ate on the mountain or the yellow truck coffee shop next to the clock tower,Yellow Truck Coffee, Clock Tower, Chiang Rai Citythese are things I want everyone to try and experience.

Summary of the Chiang Rai experience, Mr. Hotsia style

For me, Chiang Rai is not just a famous tourist city known for its temples or beautiful nature, but a place of life learning, local ways, and meeting warm and sincere people. Unseen travel in Mr. Hotsia style means going out to experience things that are rarely talked about, whether it’s the morning and evening markets, affordable and charming accommodations, hill tribe ways on Doi Pha Tang, or just strolling the walking street and tasting new foods.

If you are looking for a journey that offers more than just photos, Chiang Rai is the answer I want you to experience yourself.
