PUD THAI Chiang Khong Ban Yim Pad Thai - Deeply delicious in the border town
When talking about Chiang Rai, many people probably think of Wat Rong Khun or Doi Chang, which I have shared before inWat Rong Khun, the White Temple of Chiang RaiorDriving Tour of Doi ChangBut this time, mr.hotsia takes you to try a hidden gem in Chiang Khong, a small district by the Mekong River opposite Laos. This place not only offers beautiful riverside scenery but also hides local eateries so delicious they must be shared. That is “PUD THAI Chiang Khong” or Ban Yim Chiang Khong Pad Thai.
Pad Thai might seem like a common dish found in big cities, but at Ban Yim Chiang Khong, it’s not just ordinary Pad Thai. I arrived in the late afternoon on the main street of Chiang Khong, which was not very busy, but this restaurant was lively with locals coming continuously. The aroma of oyster sauce and roasted peanuts greeted me as soon as I stepped in. The Pad Thai made with thin rice noodles was chewy and fragrant with a homestyle wok scent, topped with large dried shrimp and perfectly cooked eggs. The seasoning was a balanced blend of sour, sweet, and salty—not diluted like many places in big cities.
What impressed mr.hotsia was the care in ingredients and the original recipe here. As I mentioned, many locals eat here, so this Pad Thai is not just for tourists but truly a favorite local dish. I spoke with the owner, a local, who said the restaurant has been open for over 10 years, keeping the original recipe unchanged. Sometimes, the deliciousness comes from simplicity.
After enjoying Ban Yim Pad Thai, I strolled along Chiang Khong’s streets, observing the simple lifestyle of the people. This place made me reflect on the difference between urban Chiang Rai and the border town of Chiang Khong. For those who love deep local travel, Chiang Khong is a perfect choice.

Travel Tips and Advice from mr.hotsia
Chiang Khong is about 80 kilometers from Chiang Rai city, roughly a 1.5-hour drive. The road is easy to drive, and the views on both sides are beautiful, especially during the rainy season when the rice fields are lush green. Ban Yim Pad Thai is on the main road of Chiang Khong and easy to find if you ask locals.
For those really interested in trying it, I recommend going during the daytime because the restaurant usually closes early in the evening. "PUD THAI Chiang Khong Ban Yim Pad Thai" is not just an ordinary Pad Thai restaurant. It reflects the lifestyle and culture of Chiang Khong people clearly. I, mr.hotsia, who have traveled all over Thailand, admit this is one of the most impressive Pad Thais I've had—aroma, taste, and the feeling of eating in a small roadside shop that isn’t fancy but full of sincerity.
