Pudthai @Chiang Rai Walking Street: Chill dining and traveling, the authentic Chiang Rai way with mr.hotsia
Chiang Rai is a small city full of cultural charm and local cuisine waiting for us to taste. Chiang Rai Walking Street, also well known as the Saturday Walking Street of this city, is one place I, mr.hotsia, never miss whenever I visit Chiang Rai. The refreshing atmosphere and the variety of food along this street make me fall in love and return to stroll many times.
Chiang Rai Walking Street is located in the city center, near the Chiang Rai Clock Tower. If you haven't read about the charming clock tower and its beautiful light and sound show, you can read more atChiang Rai Clock TowerAs for me, mr.hotsia, I chose to stay at Suknirand Hotel, which is right next to the clock tower. It’s just a few minutes’ walk to the walking street, very convenient for evening strolls, tasting, and shopping. Strolling and Eating Local Food at Pudthai
At Chiang Rai Walking Street, I, mr.hotsia, must say you can’t miss Pudthai, a place full of authentic Thai food. The aroma of Thai spices and herbs drifts from afar. The restaurant has a street food vibe where locals and international tourists alike keep coming.
My favorite dish that I order every time is Khao Soi Gai (Northern Thai curry noodle soup). It’s rich with authentic northern curry flavors, served with complete side dishes including pickled vegetables and crispy fried shallots. Enjoy it with a spicy jaew dipping sauce. Or try freshly grilled Sai Ua (northern Thai sausage) with its fragrant northern herbs—it’s truly delicious. This is the charm of northern cuisine that I, mr.hotsia, love.
There are also various dishes like Kaeng Hang Lay (northern pork curry stew), braised pork with spices, and Nam Prik Noom (green chili dip) that make me feel like I’m truly experiencing the lifestyle of Chiang Rai people. Dining here is unhurried because of the pleasant atmosphere, with traditional music and soft chatter, giving a warm feeling like eating with friends at home.
Atmosphere and Lifestyle of Chiang Rai Walking Street
Chiang Rai Walking Street is not just a food hub but also a collection of local arts, handicrafts, and unique souvenirs. I watched locals selling leather goods, woodwork, and Lanna handwoven fabrics. Seeing the smiles and friendliness of the people here impressed me with their simplicity and warmth.
Some shops demonstrate making local crafts live, such as weaving or making silver jewelry in hill tribe styles, which I once saw while driving around Doi Chang. (Read aboutDriving Around Doi Chang) This helped me gain deeper understanding of the culture.
Chiang Rai Walking Street is a perfect place for those who want to experience the warm and unhurried lifestyle of a small city. I, mr.hotsia, enjoy sitting and watching people, browsing food and souvenirs, and no matter how many times I come, it always feels like the first time.
Tips for Visiting Chiang Rai Walking Street with mr.hotsia
If you plan to visit Chiang Rai on a Saturday evening, I recommend booking a hotel in the city center like Suknirand Hotel. For more convenience, consider Wiang Inn Hotel or Inkam Hotel, which are near the night market and tourist areas, just a short walk from the walking street. (More info atAffordable and Good Hotels in Chiang Rai City)
Start your walk around 5 PM when the atmosphere is just right—not too hot—and shops are open until 9 PM. I, mr.hotsia, like to walk slowly, tasting food little by little so I don’t get too full and still have room for dessert, like the nearby mango sticky rice ice cream. (If you want to know about Chiang Rai’s mango sticky rice ice cream, read atMango Sticky Rice Ice Cream Chiang Rai)
Don’t forget to bring cash because many shops don’t accept credit cards yet, and bring a cloth bag to help reduce plastic waste.
