Chiang Rai Walking Street: Kad Chiang Rai Remembrance, a Saturday night full of life and culture
When talking about Chiang Rai, a northern city with a unique charm, I, mr.hotsia, must recommend one nighttime experience you shouldn't miss: “Chiang Rai Walking Street,” locally known as “Kad Chiang Rai Remembrance,” which opens only on Saturday nights. Stretching from the Aomsin Intersection to the Nong Si Jaeng Intersection, this street is full of vibrant life and authentic Lanna culture.
The first time I visited the Saturday walking street, I felt like I stepped into another world. This is not just an ordinary market; there is a retro circle dance where everyone can join in the fun. Live bands play traditional Lanna folk music throughout the street. I saw locals in traditional costumes selling unique handwoven clothes. It was a great opportunity for a traveler like me to deeply experience local culture, not just buy things and walk by.
While strolling, I encountered a group of street musicians playing traditional instruments like the khaen and salo-so-sueang, which are rarely heard in daily life. Listening to these melodies in an atmosphere filled with lights and shoppers was a small joy I cherish in my memories.
Besides culture, the food at the walking street is equally enticing. There are both Chiang Rai local dishes and authentic Thai food to enjoy. I personally tried the rich-flavored chicken khao soi, and the flavorful pork blood soup that was so good I went back for seconds. There is also a yellow truck coffee shop not far from the walking street, a perfect spot to rest and enjoy the evening atmosphere of Chiang Rai city.
Why does Chiang Rai Walking Street have such a unique charm?
Many may ask why I prefer this walking street over others. The simple answer is “culture” and the “community spirit of Chiang Rai people” that make this street unlike any ordinary market. Here, locals and tourists blend harmoniously. There are traditional cultural performances like the retro circle dance, and you can hear rare traditional instruments that are hard to find in everyday life.
The Sunday walking street called “Thanon Kon Muan” on San Khong Noi Road is another popular spot, though I haven’t had the chance to visit yet. However, I’ve heard it’s not just a market but also a stage where many ethnic groups come together to revisit their past and showcase their cultures, offering another fascinating dimension of Chiang Rai.
Relax and stroll around Chiang Rai city
While visiting Chiang Rai Walking Street, I stayed at Suknirand Hotel, located next to the Chiang Rai Clock Tower. This location is very convenient as it’s within walking distance to the walking street and night market. It’s also close to many local coffee shops and restaurants that I recommend for anyone wanting to truly experience the charm of Chiang Rai city.Affordable and good hotels in Chiang Rai cityThis is another option I recommend on my website.
If you’re interested in strolling around Chiang Rai city, I wrote an articleStrolling in Chiang Rai citythat describes nearby attractions such as the Clock Tower with its evening light and sound show, and the bustling morning market. All of these make Chiang Rai a comfortable city for walking travelers who want to experience authentic lifestyle and culture.
Connect with Wat Rong Khun and other attractions
If you come to Chiang Rai and don’t visitWat Rong Khunalso known as the White Temple, it’s almost impossible. This temple is the artwork of Chalermchai Kositpipat, which I have visited and found very impressive. It’s not only the beauty of the architecture but also a place that offers reflection and inspiration to many, including myself.
If you want to explore a bit further, I recommend driving toDoi Changwhich is a famous coffee-growing area in Chiang Rai. The mountain atmosphere is cool even in summer, and the views are unbelievably beautiful for Thailand. This kind of adventure adds more color to your Chiang Rai trip and makes it more memorable.
