ASEAN Flower Festival in Chiang Rai: The vibrant colors of winter you shouldn't miss

When talking about Chiang Rai in early year, many might think of Wat Rong Khun or beautiful mountain views, but for me, mr.hotsia, the ASEAN Flower Festival held in Chiang Rai in early January is another reason that makes me want to revisit this city again and again. This event is not just about viewing flowers, but a perfect blend of nature's freshness and the vibrant culture of ASEAN.

As someone who has attended this event since 2013, I can say that strolling through the ASEAN Flower Festival in Chiang Rai has a unique charm beyond any other flower festivals I've experienced. Especially when compared to the Royal Flora Ratchaphruek in Chiang Mai held in December, it feels like both events compete to brighten up Northern Thailand during the year-end and New Year period.

Firsthand Experience from the Field: ASEAN Flower Festival Chiang Rai

The first thing that impressed me was the convenience of this event. Here, there isfree Wi-Fi internetavailable throughout the festival area, which is great for tourists wanting to share beautiful photos or look up more information while exploring.

Inside the festival, there are various flower gardens, especially a beautifully arranged tulip garden that feels like bringing a touch of Europe to Chiang Rai. Additionally, there isartificial snowto play with, which for someone who has never experienced real snow like me, was a new and exciting experience. Although the queue was quite long and required some waiting, once I tried it, I forgot all about the heat.

Another activity I really enjoyed was boating on the Kok River, an important river in Chiang Rai. Cruising along the riverbanks filled with nature and local villages was a relaxing experience that made me feel that visiting Chiang Rai was truly complete.

Getting around the festival is also convenient with tricycle rentals available, though I found the prices a bit high. For those wanting to save money, I recommend a leisurely walk to better absorb the lovely atmosphere around. The best time to visit is from evening to night because the daytime can be quite hot, but after sunset, the cool air and lights from the flowers and displays make the event come alive.

Connecting with Chiang Rai City: Nearby Accommodations and Attractions

If you plan to attend the ASEAN Flower Festival and want to stay in Chiang Rai city, I recommend checking outaffordable and good hotels in Chiang Rai citysuch as Suknirand Hotel, which is located near the Chiang Rai Clock Tower. This hotel is budget-friendly and conveniently located close to the morning market, evening market, and the Saturday Walking Street called “Kad Chiang Rai Ram Luek,” another activity I enjoy after visiting the flower festival.

Speaking of the Clock Tower, I want to recommend visitingChiang Rai Clock Towerwhich features a light and sound show in the evening. Besides admiring the beautiful architecture designed by Chalermchai Kositpipat, the creator of Wat Rong Khun, you can also experience the lively nighttime atmosphere of Chiang Rai city.

Eat, Travel, and Experience Life in Chiang Rai

After enjoying the flower festival and strolling around the city, I usually find time to explore local food and eateries with a wide variety, such as the famous San Khee Bao Duck Noodle shop or try the delicious oxtail soup biryani I recommended inthis clipas well.

For a relaxed walk, I suggest visitingthe Saturday Walking Street “Kad Chiang Rai Ram Luek”which is not just a market for goods and food but also a cultural and artistic stage for Chiang Rai locals and ASEAN people. I love the warm atmosphere where both locals and tourists stroll together.
