Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai Airport, the warm gateway to the North

When it comes to traveling north to Chiang Rai province, almost everyone always thinks of Mae Fah Luang Airport as the starting point. I, mr.hotsia, have had many opportunities to use this airport from my real trips to Chiang Rai. I can say this airport feels like a gateway to a charming small city full of stories waiting to be discovered.

Location and Transportation from the City

Mae Fah Luang Airport, also known as Chiang Rai Airport, is about 9 kilometers from Chiang Rai city center, just across the Kok River. The easiest and most convenient way to travel from the city to the airport is by taxi. Here, the fare system charges 10 baht per kilometer, which is quite new to me coming from other cities where flat rates are more common. So if you stay in Chiang Rai city, like I stayed atSuknirand Hotelnear the Clock Tower, taking a taxi to the airport costs about 90 baht if you book a flat rate from the hotel. But if you use the taxi meter, the price might be just over 60 baht. For those who want to save money, try asking or using the meter.

Flying Experience from Mae Fah Luang Airport

The main airlines serving here include AirAsia, Thai Airways, and Nok Air, as well as direct flights from China. I often use AirAsia because the ticket prices from Chiang Rai to Don Mueang are quite cheap when booked in advance. I have gotten special fares much lower than other airlines, which is perfect for budget travelers or those wanting to explore Chiang Rai economically.

Mae Fah Luang Airport is compact and not as busy as large airports but fully equipped with basic facilities. It suits tourists coming to Chiang Rai to experience nature and culture directly. I like the atmosphere here that feels warm and relaxing from the moment you arrive in Chiang Rai.

Chiang Rai, a City to Take Time to Experience

After getting off the plane and leaving the airport, I, mr.hotsia, recommend spending a night or two exploring Chiang Rai city because it has more charm than you might think, includingWat Rong Khunfamous worldwide as the White Temple with unique artwork, orChiang Rai Walking Streetwhich is lively and bustling on Saturdays and Sundays. Here you will find local food, handicrafts, and the warm hospitality of Northern people ready to welcome tourists with smiles.

Recommended Activities and Places to Eat in Chiang Rai

If you love eating like me, I suggest trying local food in Chiang Rai city, such as the pork blood soup at Saharos near Suknirand Hotel, or visiting the Yellow Truck Coffee shop nearChiang Rai Clock Towerwhere I often stop in the morning to recharge. Also, coffee lovers should not miss visiting Doi Chang, a famous coffee growing area of Chiang Rai, just about an hour's drive from the city center (read more atDriving Tour of Doi Chang)

Convenient Travel for a True Northern Experience

Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai Airport is not only a destination for tourists but also a gateway to adventures in the beautiful and impressive northern land. I, mr.hotsia, want everyone to experience it themselves because Chiang Rai has more than meets the eye, and Mae Fah Luang Airport makes your journey much easier and more convenient.

If you are planning a trip to Chiang Rai, don't forget to allocate time to stay in the city to experience the lifestyle and visit important places like Wat Rong Khun and Chiang Rai Clock Tower. I guarantee this trip will be full of great memories.
