Eating Doi Pha Hee Rice Porridge @ Doi Pha Hee, Chiang Rai
When it comes to traveling in Chiang Rai, many might think of Wat Rong Khun or the clock tower in downtown Chiang Rai, which I have shared in previous articles. But this time, mr.hotsia will take you to eat rice porridge at Doi Pha Hee, a place that many may not know well yet. I can assure you that the taste and atmosphere here are so amazing that I want to share it.
Doi Pha Hee is located not far from Chiang Rai city. Just a few kilometers driving up the mountain and you reach the destination. I still remember the feeling of sitting and eating rice porridge on the mountain with cool breezes and beautiful mountain views all around. It felt like recharging my energy after walking around downtown Chiang Rai or after visiting Wat Rong Khun (read more atWat Rong Khun, the White Temple of Chiang Rai) which is world-famous.
The rice porridge restaurant at Doi Pha Hee has a simple hill tribe style atmosphere, but the ingredients and flavors are definitely extraordinary. I recall the porridge here being smooth and soft, not too thick, with many side dishes to choose from, including minced pork, liver, century egg, or you can order special meat options like chicken or braised pork. Most importantly, everything looks clean and fresh, making it very satisfying and perfect for those who love rice porridge like me.
I usually stop here in the morning after waking up from my accommodation in downtown Chiang Rai, where there are many good and affordable hotels to choose from, such as Suknirand Hotel where I often stay, near the Chiang Rai clock tower (read more atAffordable and Good Hotels in Chiang RaiandChiang Rai Clock Tower). After a satisfying breakfast of rice porridge, I usually have the energy to continue to the Chiang Rai Walking Street or drive to Doi Chang, which is not far away (read about Doi Chang atDriving Trip to Doi Chang)
). My feeling about Doi Pha Hee is that it is a small resting spot located above sea level, providing cool and comfortable weather all day long, even during the hot season. I enjoy sitting and eating hot rice porridge in this atmosphere because it feels warmer and more peaceful than eating in the city where it is busier and has more traffic.
Besides rice porridge, Doi Pha Hee also offers other interesting local dishes such as Sai Ua (Northern Thai sausage), Hang Lay curry, or simple dishes like minced pork omelet made fresh every time. I have ordered these before and was impressed by the mild, natural flavors without too many artificial seasonings. It really feels like eating homemade food.
For those who want to try the experience of eating rice porridge at Doi Pha Hee, I recommend waking up early or coming here at dawn to enjoy the light mist and cool breeze passing through the mountain. The trip is convenient as it takes less than 30 minutes from Chiang Rai city. If you want to stay overnight, there are some small accommodations available, mostly hill tribe homestays, which offer a very different atmosphere from city hotels.
If you are planning a trip to Chiang Rai and want to try simple rice porridge on a mountain with great views and cool weather, I highly recommend Doi Pha Hee. I, mr.hotsia, have been there and am impressed every time I visit.
