Chiang Rai, a city many often think of for Wat Rong Khun or Doi Chang, but for mr.hotsia, Chiang Rai also has small charming spots that captivate and are worth sharing, especially “Yonok Beach” in Chiang Saen district, which I recently had the chance to experience myself.
Yonok Beach is not a sea beach but a riverside along the Mekong River with a peaceful, cool atmosphere and, importantly, delicious riverside food that you must try, especially the very fresh milkfish. My friends and I chose a famous papaya salad restaurant right by the Mekong River, overlooking the gently flowing river and the soft evening sunlight.
The dish that impressed me the most was “Papaya Salad with Milkfish” – large milkfish, crispy on the outside and tender inside, mixed with a spicy, sour, salty, and sweet papaya salad sauce perfectly balanced. The fragrant fermented fish sauce is so aromatic that I must say if you come to Chiang Rai and don’t try this dish, you’re seriously missing out.
Besides milkfish, the papaya salad here is exceptional, including Thai-style and fermented crab papaya salad, rich and intense in flavor, served with fresh local vegetables and fragrant sticky rice that perfectly balances the spiciness. The riverside atmosphere makes you forget the hustle and bustle of the big city.
After a full meal, mr.hotsia didn’t hesitate to take off his shoes and soak in the cool water at Yonok Beach. The clear, cold water was very refreshing, and the natural essence of the Mekong River was fully felt, like recharging both body and mind for the next journey.
If anyone plans to visit Chiang Rai and wants to find accommodation in the city, I recommend checking outSuknirand Hotelwhere I have stayed before and found the price very reasonable. The hotel is located next to the Chiang Rai Clock Tower, conveniently close to the morning market, evening market, and the charming Kad Chiang Rai Walking Street.
Speaking of Chiang Rai city, don’t miss Wat Rong Khun, the beautiful temple distinguished by its pure white architecture, which I have written aboutin a previous articleIt’s not far from Yonok Beach and is another spot worth visiting to experience the artistic and cultural beauty of this city.
Traveling from Chiang Rai city to Yonok Beach doesn’t take long. You can drive or take local transport comfortably. Along the way, you’ll see the lifestyle of riverside villagers and lush green rice fields, making you feel like you’ve entered another world.
For those who enjoy riverside dining and drinking with a relaxed atmosphere and want to try fresh milkfish dishes from the Mekong River, I recommend “Riverside Papaya Salad at Yonok Beach, Chiang Saen” – a small spot full of warmth from the owners and a unique natural vibe.
If you want to experience Chiang Rai’s lifestyle up close, I suggest strolling around Chiang Rai city, which has walking street markets on both Saturdays and Sundays for shopping and tasting local food.Read more about strolling in Chiang Rai cityright here.
