Eat to Fullness in Chiang Rai, a city of local cuisine you must try

"Chiang Rai" is a northern city many recognize as the gateway to high mountain adventures and remarkable artistic temples. But for mr.hotsia, Chiang Rai offers more than just nature and beautiful temples. It is a paradise for food lovers who want to eat heartily and savor the deep flavors of local dishes. Especially in downtown Chiang Rai, where I had the chance to stroll and eat until I was nearly bursting. I must say, if you come here and don’t try the food in this area, you’re missing out on something truly special.

Start a new morning with Yellow Truck Coffee and Saharos Pork Blood Soup

On the first morning, I woke up early and walked out from Suknirand Hotel, a budget-friendly accommodation in downtown Chiang Rai (for those interested, check the info atAffordable and Good Hotels in Chiang Rai). This hotel is located right next to the Chiang Rai Clock Tower, a very convenient location, just a few steps to the morning market.

I pinned the Yellow Truck Coffee shop, famous among tourists and locals alike. This coffee is aromatic, strong, and uniquely distinctive. Paired with Saharos Pork Blood Soup right next door, I must say this dish is a signature of Chiang Rai that mr.hotsia highly recommends. The broth is rich and flavorful, with tender pork and offal that you can chew fully, giving you an authentic local eating experience.

Enjoy a leisurely walk and eat at Chiang Rai Market and Walking Street

After recharging in the morning, I strolled around the morning market and the Saturday Walking Street "Kad Chiang Rai Ram Luek," not far from the Clock Tower. This place is full of rare northern delicacies, from local sweets like sticky rice with coconut milk and northern sausage to freshly fried snacks at affordable prices. I sampled continuously until I almost forgot I had other places to visit.

If you visit Chiang Rai on a Saturday, don’t miss this walking street as it’s a great hub of food and culture. Besides eating, you get to experience the community atmosphere and genuine local lifestyle. If you want a different vibe on Sunday, try strolling "Thanon Khon Muan" in the San Khong Noi area for a distinct experience.

Favorite spots of mr.hotsia – Braised Beef Basil and Duck Noodles

When talking about food mr.hotsia loves in Chiang Rai, I can’t skip the famous braised beef basil shop. Located in the area around Wiang, the shop named Roy Han is one I tried and found the flavor perfectly balanced. The braised beef is so tender it almost melts in your mouth, and the basil stir-fry has a fragrant, distinct spice aroma. This dish is a must-try for those who enjoy bold Thai flavors. (Detailed location of Roy Han is in my video)The Ultimate Braised Beef Basil)

Another regular stop for me is “P. Duck Noodle San Khi Bao,” a long-established duck noodle shop in downtown Chiang Rai. They serve tender duck with a rich broth. Whether you order noodles or stewed duck, this place perfectly satisfies duck lovers like me. Travel details and the shop atmosphere are in my video here.P. Duck Noodle San Khi Bao

After eating to fullness, don’t forget to visit beautiful temples and the Chiang Rai Clock Tower

For touring downtown Chiang Rai, mr.hotsia recommends combining eating with visiting important sites like Wat Rong Khun, the famous White Temple (read more atWat Rong Khun, the White Temple of Chiang Rai). Here, besides admiring the exquisite art, you also learn the profound meanings embedded in the philosophy of life.

Another favorite spot of mr.hotsia is the Chiang Rai Clock Tower, located in the city center and near my hotel (read hotel and location review atAffordable and Good Hotels in Chiang Rai). The clock tower, designed by Chalermchai Kositpipat, features an impressive light and sound show in the evening, which I never miss whenever I visit (read more atChiang Rai Clock Tower)

Eating and Traveling Tips in Chiang Rai from mr.hotsia

From my eating journey in Chiang Rai, I want to advise those planning to visit and eat here to be patient and open-minded to try local dishes fully. Don’t be afraid if some flavors don’t immediately suit your taste because Chiang Rai food is diverse and uniquely flavored. I usually recommend starting with simple dishes like Khao Soi and Sai Ua, then moving on to richer dishes like duck noodles or the braised beef basil I mentioned.

Also, don’t forget to relax comfortably in the city to fully enjoy walking around markets and walking streets. Here, the food and atmosphere will make you feel truly immersed in Chiang Rai, not just a typical tourist spot.

Summary

For mr.hotsia, Chiang Rai is not just a city of natural attractions or beautiful temples. It is a city full of charm through local food and culture that lets you truly "eat to fullness." If you plan to visit Chiang Rai, be sure to try the delicious food around the Clock Tower and morning market. Trust me, you will have a rewarding and memorable eating experience that will make you want to come back again.
