But for mr.hotsia, this place is very interesting in terms of culture, lifestyle, and of course, delicious local food that’s hard to find in big cities. At Som Tum Sud Khet Chiang Khong, I met a beautiful girl who carefully and attentively made som tum by hand. The taste was bold yet balanced, truly satisfying and spicy.

The Beginning of a Spicy Meal in Chiang Khong

mr.hotsia’s journey arrived in Chiang Khong one afternoon. The cool weather of Chiang Rai made eating som tum by the roadside extremely enjoyable. Som Tum Sud Khet Chiang Khong is located on the main road near a lively local fresh market bustling with locals and tourists. Watching the process of making fresh som tum was impressive. The beautiful lady at the restaurant carefully pounded fresh bird’s eye chilies with garlic, then added lime, fish sauce, palm sugar, and rich fermented fish sauce just right.

The dish I want to recommend is the “Mama Salad,” which is unique and very tempting. Here, they don’t just serve ordinary som tum but mix in soft boiled Mama noodles tossed with a bold, unapologetic spicy salad dressing. The perfect blend of sour, sweet, and spicy makes every bite fun and refreshing. This Mama Salad reflects the creativity of Isaan cuisine that you can experience firsthand and became my favorite dish on this trip.
