Sangwa Cafe Chiang Khong: A chill riverside check-in spot in Chiang Khong District, Chiang Rai Province
When it comes to Chiang Rai, many people probably think of Wat Rong Khun or the Chiang Rai Clock Tower that I have shared in previous articles. But if you want to venture to the northernmost part of the province bordering Laos, you must not miss “Sangwa Cafe Chiang Khong.” I, mr.hotsia, have visited myself and feel compelled to share because the atmosphere and coffee flavor here are truly unique in Chiang Rai.
Chiang Khong is a small district with a peaceful and unique charm, located along the Mekong River, which serves as the border between Thailand and Laos. Traveling from Chiang Rai city to Chiang Khong takes about 1.5 to 2 hours by car along the main road passing green mountains and rice fields, hill tribe villages, and famous coffee plantations, similar to Doi Chang that I have recommended in previous articles.Driving trip to Doi Changwhich is not very far away
Atmosphere and Location
Sangwa Cafe Chiang Khong is located right on the main road in Chiang Khong town, not far from the fresh market and the ferry pier to Laos. The cafe’s atmosphere stands out with its simple yet stylish design, blending modern elements with the natural northern charm. The open-air shop catches the Mekong River breeze, allowing you to enjoy coffee while watching the gentle river flow peacefully.
I, mr.hotsia, sat sipping coffee in the soft morning sun, watching locals stop by to buy coffee and chat warmly. It felt like experiencing the authentic lifestyle of Chiang Khong people. This is not just an ordinary cafe but a meeting point for locals and tourists seeking tranquility, with cool photo spots and various seating options, including a riverside bar counter and wooden tables in a small garden shaded by trees.
Must-Try Menu
For drinks at Sangwa Coffee, I recommend trying the drip coffee made from freshly roasted beans from Doi Chang or Doi Wawi, renowned coffee-growing areas in Chiang Rai. The coffee here is rich but not overly bitter, with a harmonious aroma of fruits and flowers.
There are also tea and fresh fruit juice options for those who don’t drink coffee, along with homemade desserts like coconut cake and soft Thai sweets, perfect for relaxing in a truly comfortable atmosphere.
I, mr.hotsia, tried the “Iced Latte” and “Doi Chang Drip Coffee” with coconut cake and found the flavors refreshing and smooth. It’s the perfect coffee for a day when you need to recharge before exploring the town or walking the riverside market.
Strolling Along the Mekong and Tasting Local Food
After recharging with coffee at Sangwa Cafe, I, mr.hotsia, recommend taking a walk along the nearby Mekong riverside road. The morning atmosphere here is peaceful, with a small morning market selling local foods such as Khanom Jeen (fermented rice noodles), Nam Prik Num (young chili dip), Sai Ua (Northern Thai sausage), and other Northern dishes that are just as delicious as those in Chiang Rai city.
Chiang Khong is also famous as a gateway to Laos, resulting in a cultural blend between the two sides of the Mekong River. At the riverside market, you can see products from Laos being sold, including handicrafts, woven fabrics, and interesting exotic foods.
Connection with Chiang Rai and Nearby Attractions
If you have several days to explore Chiang Rai, I recommend planning your itinerary accordingly. You might stay in Chiang Rai city first, where there are many affordable and good hotels to choose from, such asSuknirand HotelOr if you prefer a more convenient city atmosphere, consider Wiang Inn Hotel and The Legend Chiang Rai, which are close to the Chiang Rai Clock Tower that features beautiful light and sound shows at night.See details about the Chiang Rai Clock Towerin my article.
After exploring the city, drive to Chiang Khong to experience the peaceful riverside nature and enjoy coffee at Sangwa Cafe, alternating with a visit to Wat Rong Khun,Chiang Rai’s famous white temple,or drive up to Doi Chang, which has coffee plantations and cool weather. It’s a perfect trip combination for those who love nature and cultural travel.
Summary of Impressions at Sangwa Cafe Chiang Khong
Sangwa Cafe Chiang Khong is not just an ordinary coffee shop but a place where I, mr.hotsia, truly felt relaxed and connected with the local community. Seeing the lifestyle of people along the Mekong River while sipping excellent coffee in a comfortable atmosphere is a happiness that is hard to find nowadays.
If you visit Chiang Rai, don’t forget to spend a day or two in Chiang Khong District and try chilling out at Sangwa Cafe. I guarantee you will love it as much as I, mr.hotsia, do.
