Live Broadcast: Eating Thonglor Roasted Duck in Chiang Rai with mr.hotsia
When talking about Chiang Rai, many might think of the beautiful Wat Rong Khun or Doi Chang with its coffee plantations. But for mr.hotsia, this city also holds the charm of local cuisine worth tasting. This time, I will take you to experience live eating of Thonglor roasted duck in downtown Chiang Rai, a place I discovered and loved so much I had to share.
Thonglor Roasted Duck is a famous roasted duck restaurant in Chiang Rai, located not far fromChiang Rai Clock TowerI stayed near the clock tower at Suknirand Hotel, a budget hotel with a great location, perfect for travelers who want to explore the city conveniently. (If anyone is interested in accommodation in Chiang Rai, mr.hotsia has written recommendations inAffordable and Good Hotels in Chiang RaiPlease take a look.)
That evening, I walked from the hotel to Thonglor Roasted Duck restaurant feeling hungry and excited. Although the restaurant is not large, the atmosphere was lively with locals and tourists continuously coming to eat. The aroma of roasted duck with perfectly crispy skin floated in the air, making my heart race with eagerness to try it immediately.
The must-try dish I recommend is the roasted duck grilled over low heat until tender yet juicy, with crispy skin. It is served with a rich dark soy dipping sauce and hot steamed jasmine rice, which the restaurant uses high-quality fragrant rice that pairs perfectly with roasted duck. Eating roasted duck at Thonglor is unlike anywhere else because they use fresh local ducks from Chiang Rai, raised in a cool climate that gives the meat a uniquely sweet and tender flavor.
Besides roasted duck, the restaurant also offers other interesting dishes such as pork blood soup with a balanced flavor and aromatic spices, and crispy pork belly that is crunchy to bite. These are great options for those wanting to try a variety. mr.hotsia recommends ordering them together for a full flavor experience.
The atmosphere inside the restaurant is filled with the chatter of customers, both locals and tourists, creating a feeling like dining with friends rather than just eating at a regular restaurant. I had a chance to talk with the kind and attentive owner, who shared that Thonglor Roasted Duck has been open for many years and has consistently maintained its unique quality and taste.
After a satisfying meal, I took a walk around downtown Chiang Rai in the evening. If you visit on a Saturday or Sunday, you shouldn’t missChiang Rai Walking Streetwhich is full of food stalls, souvenir shops, and fun activities. Also, if you want to truly experience Chiang Rai, I recommend stopping by the Yellow Car Coffee shop near the clock tower, another favorite check-in spot of mr.hotsia (read more atYellow Car Coffee, Chiang Rai Clock Tower)
For those who enjoy a chill travel style, it’s worth staying in Chiang Rai for a night or two to truly experience the local lifestyle and flavors. I personally chose to stay at Suknirand Hotel because of its great location and budget-friendly price, which made my trip in Chiang Rai much more convenient and enjoyable.

Chiang Rai: A City Beyond Expectations
Chiang Rai is not just about roasted duck or Wat Rong Khun; it also has many other interesting attractions such as Doi Chang, famous for its high-quality coffee, or Wat Rong Khun, the white temple artwork by Chalermchai Kositpipat, which I have previously written about inWat Rong Khun: The White Temple of Chiang RaiAnd if you want to explore nature, not far from the city is Doi Chang, which I have driven to visit inDriving Trip to Doi ChangI can say the atmosphere there is wonderful.
Chiang Rai is therefore a city perfect for travelers who love diversity in culture, nature, and local food. Especially if you try the Thonglor roasted duck I described, I guarantee you will be hooked and want to come back again.
Finally, mr.hotsia invites everyone to open their hearts and experience Chiang Rai from a unique perspective, whether it’s strolling around the city, tasting street food, or staying at budget-friendly hotels. I assure you will take home more impressions than you expect.
