Nong Kaem takes you to explore Chiang Khong, the riverside painted town you must experience

Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I'll take you to visit a small town by the Mekong River called "Chiang Khong" in Chiang Rai Province. Many may not be familiar with this town yet, but for me, this is a living painted town. Nong Kaem, my trusty companion, will take you to explore every corner of Chiang Khong and show you the rental house where I stayed during my very first trip here. I must say, the memories and atmosphere here still deeply impress me.

Chiang Khong, the Painted Town by the Mekong River

Chiang Khong is a small town located right beside the Mekong River, which forms the border between Thailand and Laos. This is not just an ordinary border town but one with its own charm — the local way of life, fresh markets, and culture are well preserved. Most importantly, the riverside atmosphere is very peaceful and beautiful. Nong Kaem and I strolled along the riverbank, enjoying the cool breeze, watching cargo boats cross the river, and seeing locals living simple lives. This is the charm of Chiang Khong that I want everyone to experience.

The rental house where I stayed the first time in Chiang Khong — truly impressive

The first time I came to Chiang Khong, I rented a small house not far from the town market. This house was an old wooden house that still fully retained the original Chiang Khong atmosphere. I remember back then there were no luxury resorts or big hotels like in Chiang Rai city, but the simplicity of this rental house made me feel warm, like truly coming home.

That house was located in a small alley surrounded by local shops and eateries. The morning atmosphere was filled with the sounds of vendors calling customers, children playing on the streets, and the aroma of breakfast from roadside stalls. Nong Kaem and I often went to the fresh market early in the morning to buy fresh vegetables, fruits, and grilled sticky rice for a simple breakfast full of authentic Chiang Khong flavors.

Chiang Khong Market — a must-visit market

Speaking of Chiang Khong, if you don't visit the central market, it's like you haven't really been here. The fresh market is very lively in the morning, offering fresh goods, river fish, local fruits and vegetables, and rare local dishes hard to find in big cities. Nong Kaem and I tried the Chiang Khong style chicken khao soi with rich, intense flavors. We also found local fruit stalls selling wild rambutan and mangosteen so sweet that we had to buy some to bring back to friends in Chiang Rai.

Connected to Chiang Rai, the city of art and culture

For those visiting Chiang Khong with limited time, I recommend planning to continue your trip toChiang Rai citywhich is not far away. Chiang Rai is a city full of fascinating art and culture, such asWat Rong Khunthe beautiful and unique White Temple, or take a stroll in town and stop for coffee atYellow Truck Coffee, Clock Towera popular meeting point for locals and tourists alike.

I once stayed atSuknirand Hotellocated near the Chiang Rai Clock Tower, which is affordable and very convenient. It's perfect for those who want to experience real city life in Chiang Rai without spending much. For those who enjoy walking street atmospheres, the Saturday night "Kad Chiang Khai Ram Luek" is an unmissable event.

Nong Kaem's impressions of Chiang Khong

Throughout this trip, Nong Kaem was a travel companion who helped open my perspective and made me see the beauty of Chiang Khong in many ways — from the warmth of the locals to the peaceful Mekong River in the evening. Everything blends perfectly like a living painting. This place is not just a transit point but a place that made me feel relaxed and truly learn about the local way of life.

Summary

If you are looking for a destination that is not crowded, has simple charm, and is full of stories about people and border life, Chiang Khong is the answer you shouldn't miss. I, mr.hotsia, recommend you try strolling along the Mekong, tasting local food, visiting the fresh market, and staying in a warm rental house like mine. I guarantee you will fall in love with this town just like I did.
