Shaved Ice @ Chiang Rai Walking Street

When talking about Chiang Rai, many people probably think of the beautiful Wat Rong Khun or the aromatic Doi Chang coffee. But for mr.hotsia, Chiang Rai Walking Street is one of the most impressive experiences, especially the shaved ice here, which perfectly combines refreshing coolness with a lively community atmosphere.

Chiang Rai Walking Street, locally known as “Kad Chiang Khai Ram Luek,” takes place every Saturday night along Thanalai Road from the Aomsin Intersection to the Nong Si Jaeng Intersection, not far from the Chiang Rai Clock Tower and the morning-evening markets in the city center. Mr.hotsia once stayed atSuknirand Hotelwhich is next to the Clock Tower, ideal for those who want to stroll the walking street and truly experience the atmosphere of Chiang Rai city.

I walked past various stalls selling everything from local woven fabrics and handicrafts to local foods that can only be found at this walking street. One dessert I couldn’t resist trying was the “shaved ice.” This is not ordinary shaved ice but topped with a variety of syrups including palm sugar syrup, fresh coconut milk, and seasonal fresh fruits like mango, longan, or salak, which add a perfect balance of freshness and sweetness.

What makes it special is that Chiang Rai shaved ice is often served with side toppings such as red beans, mung beans, or even small sticky rice flour balls that give a chewy, soft, and sweet texture, making every bite nostalgic and reminiscent of childhood. Mr.hotsia tried shaved ice at a famous shop on this walking street; the taste was just right—sweet but not cloying, and so refreshing that it made me want to stroll around several more times.

Chiang Rai Walking Street not only features outstanding shaved ice but also offers a variety of local dishes to try, such as San Khee Bao duck noodles or the braised beef basil shop that I visited following local friends’ recommendations. These shops are close to the walking street and well-known among food enthusiasts. You can find a map of these delicious spots fromBraised Beef Basil Shop Review VideoorPor Duck Noodle San Khee Baoto prepare yourself for a full food adventure.

After walking and enjoying shaved ice to my satisfaction, I usually continue strolling to the nearby Chiang Rai Clock Tower, which at night features a stunning and impressive light and sound show.Chiang Rai Clock TowerThis is an artwork designed by Ajarn Chalermchai Kositpipat, the creator of the famous Wat Rong Khun, which I have also visited several times to admire its beauty (read more atWat Rong Khun, the White Temple of Chiang Rai)

For travelers coming to Chiang Rai who want to fully experience city life, I recommend planning to stay in the city center for a night or two to enjoy the walking street on both Saturday and Sunday, and to fully savor local foods, whether shaved ice or other dishes at Night Bazaar and Khon Muan Street (read more atStrolling in Chiang Rai City Center)

If you are looking for good-value accommodation that is convenient for travel and close to food and attractions, Mr.hotsia once stayed atSuknirand Hotelwhich is affordable and located in the heart of the city, near the Clock Tower and walking street, perfect for those who enjoy leisurely walks without spending time traveling far by car.

Chiang Rai Walking Street is therefore a must-visit destination for those who love to stroll and taste delicious food in a relaxed way and truly experience the life of Chiang Rai locals. The shaved ice here is not just a dessert but a treat that fills my travel memories with happiness and joy, truly from mr.hotsia.
