Steamed Sweet Potato @Chiang Rai Walking Street: A simple snack you must try when visiting Northern Thailand
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I'll take you for a relaxed stroll atChiang Rai Walking StreetIf you've ever visited this city on a Saturday evening, you'll know this place is not just an ordinary market but a hub of delicious food and impressive local lifestyle. One of the snacks I was so impressed with that I have to share is the “steamed sweet potato” here.
The steamed sweet potatoes at Chiang Rai Walking Street are not like the usual ones you see at Bangkok's night markets. Here, the potatoes are fresh, perfectly sized, and steamed just right. The aroma from the steaming pot hits your nose as you pass by the stall. I, mr.hotsia, strolled around tasting until I found this stall with rows of very appetizing steamed sweet potatoes. I must say, these steamed sweet potatoes are simple but truly bring happiness when eaten.
I tried the sweet potato, yam, and a bit of white potato. Biting into them, the texture was smooth and soft, with a gentle sweetness that didn’t need any added sugar. The seller was kind enough to let me sample many pieces until almost the whole bag was gone. I walked eating hot steamed sweet potatoes while enjoying the bustling atmosphere filled with both locals and foreign tourists seeking delicious food.
The atmosphere of Chiang Rai Walking Street is the charm I love most about this city. Besides easy-to-enjoy snacks like steamed sweet potatoes, there are many local dishes packed with flavor and fresh ingredients, such as Khao Soi, Sai Ua, and even the braised beef basil dish I mentioned inthe recommended videoat Roy Han restaurant, which is not far from downtown Chiang Rai.
This walking street is located in the heart of Chiang Rai city, very convenient for those staying downtown. I, for example, stayed atSuknirand Hotelwhich is near the Chiang Rai Clock Tower, allowing me to easily walk to the market and walking street at night after visiting major attractions likeWat Rong Khunor driving to enjoy the view at Doi Chang during the day.(Read my Doi Chang driving review here)
Speaking of the Chiang Rai Clock Tower near my hotel, I also recommend stopping by to see the beautiful nighttime light and sound show with an interesting story that I have written about in the articleChiang Rai Clock Toweras well.
Back to Chiang Rai Walking Street, the food here is not just snacks like steamed sweet potatoes. There’s also P. Duck Noodles San Khi Bao, which I have tried and recommended inthis videoor if you want a good coffee, there’s the Yellow Truck Coffee shop near the clock tower that I have also recommended.Yellow Truck Coffee, Clock Tower, Chiang RaiThis place is perfect for those who want to relax after browsing local food and shopping for souvenirs.
I, mr.hotsia, want everyone visiting Chiang Rai to try walking the Chiang Rai Walking Street on a Saturday evening. You will realize that simple snacks like steamed sweet potatoes here have a charm and flavor that feel warm, like truly experiencing the local lifestyle. It doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive; just hot steamed sweet potatoes with the small community atmosphere made me appreciate Chiang Rai even more.
If you are planning a trip to Chiang Rai, don’t forget to set aside time to stroll the walking street in downtown Chiang Rai, full of diverse food and interesting culture. And if you enjoy deep travel experiences, visiting beautiful temples likeWat Rong Khunor driving to enjoy the Doi Chang views I mentioned can make for a complete and exciting day trip.
Finally, I, mr.hotsia, recommend that if you want to truly experience Chiang Rai’s culture and local food, you must visit the Saturday walking street here. You will find “steamed sweet potatoes” with a unique taste and feeling unlike anywhere else.
Thank you for following along. See you next time with more travel stories that I, mr.hotsia, will take you to experience. Goodbye!
