Roi Han Restaurant Chiang Rai: Delicious Islamic Cuisine in Downtown Chiang Rai
I, mr.hotsia, have had the chance to visit Chiang Rai many times, but the most recent visit that impressed me greatly was tasting Islamic food atRoi Han RestaurantA small restaurant hidden in downtown Chiang Rai, in the area around Wiang, which is where I usually stay when visiting because it’s convenient and close to the clock tower and the city’s main walking market. (If you are interested in accommodation in Chiang Rai, I recommend checking out my articleAffordable and Good Hotels in Chiang Raithat I have written before.)
Roi Han is located not far from the Chiang Rai Clock Tower, a place I often visit for evening walks and the starting point of the Saturday walking street “Kad Chiang Rai Ram Luek” (read more atWalking Around Downtown Chiang Rai). After enjoying a satisfying meal here, I could easily stroll around and experience the nighttime atmosphere of Chiang Rai.
Atmosphere and Getting There
Roi Han is not in a flashy tourist area but is a simple, homestyle restaurant with many regular customers, including locals and tourists familiar with the place. The atmosphere inside is warm, and the owner and staff are friendly and provide detailed menu recommendations, which helped me try special dishes that are not only delicious but also rich in authentic Islamic culinary culture.
For tourists staying in downtown near the clock tower, such as at Suknirand Hotel or Wiang Inn Hotel (which I recommended in the article mentioned above), getting to Roi Han is very convenient because it’s within walking distance—no need to drive or call a taxi.

The dish I highlight as the star of this restaurant is the “Braised Beef Basil,” which has a rich flavor fragrant with authentic Islamic spices. The beef is so tender it almost melts in your mouth, combined with carefully stir-fried holy basil leaves. The flavor is intense and perfectly spicy, unlike the usual basil dishes we know from typical curry rice shops. Another must-try is the “Chicken Biryani,” which has a wonderful spice aroma, is not greasy, and comes with large, satisfying chicken pieces.
Additionally, the restaurant offers several signature dishes such as Massaman curry, Islamic-style green chicken curry, and my favorite crispy roti snack, which pairs perfectly with the restaurant’s special dipping sauce.
Unforgettable Taste and Dining Experience
What made me fall in love with Roi Han was not just the taste but the attention to detail, the use of fresh ingredients, and the blend of traditional Muslim spices in Chiang Rai combined perfectly with the city’s lifestyle.
On the day I dined there, I saw customers of all ages, both locals from Chiang Rai having dinner and tourists trying the restaurant. The atmosphere and food made everyone genuinely happy with their meal.
Connection to Chiang Rai Travel
If you plan to visit Chiang Rai and want to experience the charming local Muslim community cuisine, Roi Han is a destination I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend stopping by at least once. It’s not far from important attractions likeWat Rong Khun (White Temple)and the Chiang Rai Clock Tower, which I have described in previous articles.
After a hearty meal of rich Islamic food at Roi Han, you can easily stroll through the city market or visit the walking street, making your meal part of a perfect Chiang Rai travel experience.
