Mekong River Cruise, Chiang Khong District, Chiang Rai Province: An experience that mr.hotsia must share

When talking about Chiang Rai, many people probably think of Wat Rong Khun or the beautifully illuminated clock tower at night. But for me, mr.hotsia, another profound and impressive perspective is cruising on the Mekong River in Chiang Khong District, Chiang Rai Province, where the Mekong flows and serves as the border between Thailand and neighboring countries Laos and Myanmar.

Chiang Khong is a district located at the northernmost border of Chiang Rai Province. Getting here is not as difficult as you might think. From Chiang Rai city, it takes about two and a half hours by car. The route passes through mountains and beautiful natural scenery, especially lush during the rainy season. I once stayed atSuknirand Hotel in Chiang Rai citybefore setting off early in the morning to arrive at Chiang Khong and start the river cruise.

The atmosphere at Chiang Khong pier was bustling with both Thai and international tourists. The boat used for cruising is a medium-sized long-tail boat that can seat about a dozen people. When I went, the Mekong water level was just right, making the cruise smooth and very safe. A cool breeze blew across my face, making me feel refreshingly relaxed.

Along the cruise, I saw the simple lifestyle of riverside villagers. Fishing boats passed by, and in some places, there were small riverside markets where locals sold fresh produce and daily necessities. In the distance, green mountains mixed with light mist blended with the morning sunlight.

What makes the Mekong River cruise in Chiang Khong different from other places is the closeness to nature and the tranquility amidst the great river. The Mekong here is not just a waterway or a border line but also a route of culture and connection for people on both sides.

On the boat, I chose to sit in front of the boat driver to chat and ask about his life. This young man told me he was born and raised here, using the boat for fishing and as a supplementary job during the tourist season. He also shared about changes in the Mekong over the years, including water level fluctuations by season and the impact on riverside communities.

Cruising past the important spot known as the Golden Triangle is another highlight that mr.hotsia doesn’t want you to miss. The Golden Triangle is where the Mekong River flows through three countries: Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar. The feeling of seeing and standing there is special because it is a place where history and cross-border trade have long taken place.

If you visit Chiang Rai, I recommend setting aside a day to come to Chiang Khong and cruise the Mekong River. Besides enjoying beautiful nature, you will also learn about the traditional lifestyle of riverside people that few get to see from this perspective.

Food and travel experiences in Chiang Khong that impressed mr.hotsia

After the cruise, I stopped to taste local food at Chiang Khong market. The market is not very large but full of fresh produce and local dishes to try, including grilled Mekong river fish, herbal grilled chicken, and spicy sticky rice salad. There are also snacks like Khanom Thuay Foo, grilled sticky rice, and seasonal fresh fruits.

For coffee lovers, I recommend trying Doi Chang coffee, another famous name from Chiang Rai, especially at small roadside cafes serving freshly brewed aromatic coffee. I have previouslydriven around Doi Changso I felt great drinking coffee genuinely grown in this local area.

If you want to stay overnight in Chiang Khong, there are not many accommodations but they are comfortable and reasonably priced for travelers who don’t seek luxury. However, if you prefer convenience and full facilities, I recommend staying back in Chiang Rai city. There are affordable and good hotels likeSuknirand Hotelwhere I often stay because it is conveniently located near the clock tower and city market.

Connecting Chiang Khong with Chiang Rai, a city to stroll anytime

After visiting Chiang Khong, don’t miss walking around lively Chiang Rai city with various activities to choose from, such as the Saturday Walking Street Market “Kad Chiang Rai Ramleuk” or visitingWat Rong Khunthe world-famous white temple I mentioned earlier.

Chiang Rai itself has a charm in the city that should not be overlooked, including cozy coffee shops like Yellow Truck Coffee near the clock tower,Yellow Truck Coffeeor trying local dishes at the duck noodle shop I recorded inPor Duck Noodle, San Khi Bao clipwhich is a perfect experience.

Summary of impressions from mr.hotsia

For me, the Mekong River cruise in Chiang Khong District is not just a tourist activity but an opportunity to truly experience a pure lifestyle and nature. It is a journey without rush, allowing you to slowly absorb an atmosphere distinctly different from Chiang Rai city.

For those who want to try this experience, I recommend bringing a camera because the Mekong riverside views are so beautiful you’ll want to keep them as memories. And don’t forget to continue exploring Chiang Rai city to fully experience the diversity of this province.
