Thap Pha Hin Railway Station

Thap Pha Hin Railway Station, a small starting point connecting the wide world in Chiang Rai.
When talking about Chiang Rai province, many people probably think of the stunning Wat Rong Khun or Doi Chang, famous for its coffee. But for mr.hotsia, Thap Pha Hin Railway Station is another small corner I want to invite you to visit because it is not just an ordinary railway station but a place that reflects the lifestyle and simplicity of the people of Chiang Rai in a fascinating way.
Thap Pha Hin Railway Station is located in Mueang Chiang Rai District. Although the name sounds like a place in Central Thailand, this is part of the Northern railway line stretching through Chiang Rai. The station is small and compact but is a bustling point for locals and travelers. I had the chance to visit here one evening after spending the day admiring the beauty ofWat Rong Khunall day long.
The atmosphere at Thap Pha Hin Railway Station is different from large stations in big cities. Here, you will see the simple life of locals traveling by train. The Northern railway line passing through this station connects Chiang Rai with Chiang Mai and other provinces, making me feel like I traveled back in time to an era when train travel was common and had its own charm.
Experience the community lifestyle around Thap Pha Hin Railway Station
Thap Pha Hin Railway Station is neither luxurious nor large, but what impressed me were the small shops and markets around the station. There are local food stalls with affordable prices, such as curry rice in front of the station with the fragrant aroma of curry paste and fresh meat, or a small coffee shop where the owner warmly welcomes travelers. I tried the popular Yellow Truck Coffee in Chiang Rai (read more atYellow Truck Coffee, Clock Tower, Chiang Rai) which has a smooth and fragrant taste perfect for Chiang Rai’s cool weather.
Additionally, locals bring fresh vegetables, fruits, and handmade goods to sell, creating a warm community market atmosphere that feels like a real local market stroll. I watched people waiting for the train—many were students, workers, or visitors coming to see relatives. It’s a rare sight nowadays when cars and planes have become the main modes of transport instead of trains.
Connecting the fun in Chiang Rai city
After getting off the train at Thap Pha Hin Station, if you want to relax in Chiang Rai city, I recommend affordable but quality accommodation like Suknirand Hotel, where I have stayed. It is close to theChiang Rai Clock Tower, an important city landmark. The hotel offers rooms starting at 350 baht, ideal for solo travelers or couples wanting to experience authentic city life in Chiang Rai. The location is convenient, near the morning market, evening market, and the Saturday Walking Street “Kad Chiang Rai Ram Luek” (read more about the hotel atAffordable and Good Hotels in Chiang Rai City)
For those who enjoy evening strolls in the city, I suggest visiting the Saturday Walking Street, which offers delicious food and many local souvenirs. You can also watch the light and sound show at the Chiang Rai Clock Tower in the evening, which adds even more charm (details atChiang Rai Clock Tower)
).
Routes to nature and culture around the stationIf you have more time, Chiang Rai has many interesting places, such as driving to Doi Chang, not far from the city. It is a mountain famous for high-quality coffee and the lifestyle of the Akha and Lisu hill tribes (read about my Doi Chang driving experience atDriving Trip to Doi Chang
). Or if you want to fully experience city life, the Sunday Walking Street called “Thanon Kon Muan” is another attractive option.
Thap Pha Hin Railway Station is like a small point connecting travelers to the wide world of Chiang Rai, whether it’s nature, culture, or local lifestyles that still preserve their beauty and simplicity impressively.
