Makatu @ Doi Pha Hee, Chiang Rai: Local flavors atop the mountain of the highlands

When it comes to Chiang Rai, many people think of the stunning Wat Rong Khun or the Chiang Rai Clock Tower with its captivating light and sound show. But for mr.hotsia, “Makatu @ Doi Pha Hee” is something I highly recommend experiencing at least once. It’s not just an ordinary dish but a dining show filled with stories, lifestyle, and the charm of the Doi Pha Hee people, located on a small mountain surrounded by the pure nature of Chiang Rai province.

I traveled up Doi Pha Hee from Chiang Rai city, taking nearly an hour by car. The winding route passes hill tribe villages lined with wooden houses and lush green tea plantations. Along the way, I saw the simple and warm life of the locals, a feeling hard to find in big cities. Upon arriving at Doi Pha Hee, I was welcomed by a cool atmosphere, a gentle breeze, and the scent of earth and leaves mixed with the fragrant aroma of Makatu being prepared in the shop.

Makatu, sometimes called Makatuu by some, is a local dish using meat stewed in a rich broth, seasoned with local spices and blended with the fragrance of native herbs. Many times I’ve tried Makatu here, the flavor is rich but not greasy, with a clear aroma of spices, making this dish unlike any I’ve had in Chiang Rai or northern Thailand.

The Makatu shop at Doi Pha Hee offers not only delicious food but also a small show where the owner shares stories about traditional cooking methods. It’s like opening a new perspective for travelers like me to understand the dedication and love put into their food. This makes eating Makatu not just about taste but truly experiencing the lifestyle of the mountain people.

After enjoying Makatu, I recommend taking a walk around the village or climbing to the hilltop for a view. Doi Pha Hee isn’t very high but offers views of tea plantations and green mountains stretching as far as the eye can see. During my visit, locals were picking tea leaves and coffee cherries, another main occupation here. For those interested in Doi Chang coffee, you might consider driving on to nearby Doi Chang. If you plan to stay overnight in Chiang Rai, I recommend choosing accommodation in the city center that is convenient and affordable, such as Suknirun Hotel, where I stayed and was very impressed. It’s located next to the Chiang Rai Clock Tower, which is not only a city landmark but also features an exciting light and sound show at night. Read the story and review of this hotel atAffordable and good hotels in Chiang Rai cityandChiang Rai Clock Towerwhich is another highlight you shouldn’t miss

Also, if you have free time in Chiang Rai city, don’t forget to stroll along the Saturday Walking Street, known as “Kad Chiang Khai Ram Luek,” located not far from Suknirun Hotel. Here you’ll find local food, souvenirs, and various activities reflecting the true lifestyle and culture of Chiang Rai people. More information is available atWalking in Chiang Rai citymy own

For those who love northern Thai food, I want to recommend some delicious and famous restaurants in Chiang Rai, such as Roy Han, which offers a unique braised beef basil dish, or P. Duck Noodles, San Khee Bao, which is sure to impress once you try it. I have visited both and recorded them on my YouTube channel. You can watch the clips atThe Ultimate Braised Beef BasilandP. Duck Noodles, San Khee Baorespectively

In summary, Doi Pha Hee and Makatu are not just destinations for food lovers but places where I, mr.hotsia, feel the sincerity of the mountain people, their simple way of life, food flavors connected to culture, and surrounding nature. All these feelings make me want to return and hope everyone can experience it themselves.

If you are looking for a journey that’s not just about beautiful photos but understanding local people’s lives and tasting the true flavors of Chiang Rai, Doi Pha Hee and Makatu are my undeniable answer.
