Moo Kata @ Doi Pha Hee, Chiang Rai: Delicious cold breeze on the mountain top you must try
When talking about Chiang Rai, many people probably think of the famous Wat Rong Khun or the fragrant Doi Chang coffee. But for me, Mr.Hotsia, there is another experience not to be missed when visiting Chiang Rai, which is “Moo Kata @ Doi Pha Hee” — a cool, refreshing breeze with delicious Moo Kata on the mountain top that made me fall in love with Chiang Rai even more.
Doi Pha Hee is located not far from Chiang Rai city. It takes about 30-40 minutes to drive up the mountain. The route is not difficult but full of complex mountain views and cool weather all year round. Especially at the end of the rainy season and beginning of winter, the weather is excellent. I clearly remember the last time I visited, the temperature was around 18-20 degrees Celsius with a constant cool breeze, perfect for enjoying hot Moo Kata with fragrant smoke teasing your nose.
Atmosphere and feelings at Doi Pha Hee
I, Mr.Hotsia, arrived at Doi Pha Hee in the evening just before sunset. The atmosphere on the mountain was peaceful, with Moo Kata stalls lined up along a small road. These are not just ordinary Moo Kata stalls but places where locals and tourists come bustlingly. The first feeling I experienced was the cold wind hitting my face and the aroma from the hot grill that instantly awakened my appetite.
The Moo Kata menu here includes pork belly, marinated pork, fresh sliced pork, as well as fresh vegetables, eggs, and a unique special dipping sauce. I tried dipping with the recommended spicy seafood sauce and immediately felt each bite packed with intense flavor without feeling greasy even after eating a lot. Another highlight I liked was the use of real charcoal for grilling, which gave the pork a fragrant aroma different from any other Moo Kata I have ever had.
Moo Kata trip and travel from Chiang Rai city
For those staying in Chiang Rai city, I recommend stopping bySuknirand Hotelwhere I have stayed before. It is affordable and very well located near the Chiang Rai Clock Tower. If you take a walk there before heading up to Doi Pha Hee, you will truly absorb the atmosphere of Chiang Rai’s urban community.
From the city, you can easily drive up to Doi Pha Hee. The route is straightforward with clear signs. I recommend driving in the afternoon to enjoy the lush green mountain views and cool air before sitting down to sip hot Moo Kata in the evening.
Connecting with other tourist attractions in Chiang Rai
If you have more than two days in Chiang Rai, I, Mr.Hotsia, suggest planning a diverse itinerary including visitingWat Rong Khunwhich is beautiful and unique, or driving to Doi Chang to see the famous coffee plantations as mentioned inmy article about driving to Doi Changwhich is a great idea.
Also, at night when you return to Chiang Rai city, don’t forget to stroll through the walking street market “Kad Chiang Rai Ram Luek” which opens every Saturday, as I mentioned inmy article about walking in Chiang Rai cityto experience the community atmosphere and a variety of local foods in another way.
Tips from Mr.Hotsia for eating Moo Kata at Doi Pha Hee
- Don’t come too early because the stalls won’t be fully open yet. The best time is around 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM.
- Going with several friends is more fun because you can order a variety of dishes and share the flavors.
- Try ordering eggs to crack on the grill as well for a soft and smooth texture.
- If you want a good atmosphere, choose a stall with a balcony facing the mountain view to enjoy the scenery along with your meal.
