Unseen Chiang Khong, Chiang Khong District, Chiang Rai Province – Riverside charm you must experience
Chiang Khong, a small district along the Mekong River in Chiang Rai Province, is another destination I, mr.hotsia, want to recommend everyone to visit. When people think of Chiang Rai, many might picture Wat Rong Khun or the Chiang Rai Clock Tower, but Chiang Khong has a unique charm unlike any other. It is the "unseen" beauty nestled amidst nature and the genuine riverside lifestyle of local villagers along the Mekong.
I once drove from Chiang Rai city to Chiang Khong, a route of about 140 kilometers taking around 3 hours, passing mountain ranges and hill tribe villages hidden along the slopes. Upon arriving in Chiang Khong, the first thing you feel is the tranquility and the vast atmosphere of the Mekong River. Buildings on both sides of the road still retain the old style of wooden and concrete houses mixed with small local shops that feel warm and not as hectic as big cities.
Chiang Khong Market – Enjoy the breeze and Mekong views, find local foods you must not miss
Chiang Khong Market is one of my favorite spots because it preserves the traditional lifestyle of Chiang Khong locals very well. Early in the morning, the market is filled with local people and vendors offering local delicacies such as grilled sticky rice, sai ua (Northern Thai sausage), moo yor (Vietnamese-style pork sausage), and snacks that are hard to find in big cities. There are also fresh vegetables from backyard gardens and seasonal fruits filling the stalls.
I recommend strolling through the market in the morning. The cool Mekong breeze passes by along with the aroma of freshly cooked food, making you feel refreshed and excited about the wide variety of dishes available. In the evening, riverside restaurants offer a chill and romantic atmosphere with menus featuring fresh Mekong River fish cooked perfectly with local herbs.
Riverside lifestyle and interesting boat routes
Chiang Khong is not just about the market and walking street. I, mr.hotsia, also tried taking a boat across to the Laos side, which is not far away. A boat ride along the Mekong in the evening reveals the lifestyle of villagers on both riverbanks who still fish and farm traditionally.
Traveling by boat is not only a border crossing but also a great opportunity to enjoy the beautiful natural scenery of both sides of the Mekong, while experiencing the simple and peaceful atmosphere of Chiang Khong, which contrasts with the hustle of big cities.
Comfortable accommodation and travel
For those planning to visit Chiang Khong, I, mr.hotsia, recommend staying in Chiang Rai city first because there are various accommodation options ranging from budget hotels like Suknirand Hotel, which is nearChiang Rai Clock Towerto several comfortable luxury hotels. Staying here allows you to explore Chiang Rai city and visit nearby attractions such asWat Rong Khunor drive toDoi Changconveniently.
Then travel to Chiang Khong early in the morning to truly experience the peaceful and impressive riverside town atmosphere.
Local dishes you should not miss
Speaking of food in Chiang Khong, I, mr.hotsia, want to say that the flavors and ingredients here are fresh and distinctive, especially dishes focusing on Mekong River fish such as steamed fish with herbs, salt-grilled fish, as well as authentic Northern Thai dishes like Kaeng Hang Lay, Nam Prik Noom, and Larb Moo, which are available at every local restaurant. Also, don't forget to try the authentic Northern Khao Soi from famous restaurants in Chiang Rai city, which I have recommended in my articleAffordable and good hotels in Chiang Rai citysince many restaurants are close to each other.
Interesting activities in Chiang Khong
Besides walking the market and tasting food, Chiang Khong offers many activities such as cycling to enjoy views on both sides of the Mekong, strolling along the river in the evening to watch beautiful sunsets, or taking a boat to see natural landscapes and hill tribe villages hidden along the slopes. Visiting Chiang Khong is ideal for those who love tranquility and want to experience authentic local lifestyles.
A perfect trip for those wanting a full Chiang Rai experience
For me, mr.hotsia, visiting Chiang Khong feels like completing the Chiang Rai travel experience because after exploring Chiang Rai city with itswalking streetand famous attractions likeWat Rong Khunand sipping coffee at the yellow truck near the clock tower,Yellow Truck Coffee, Chiang Rai Clock Towertraveling to Chiang Khong opens a new world where you truly experience the riverside lifestyle and beautiful nature.
For anyone planning to visit Chiang Rai, I recommend including at least one day to experience Chiang Khong and prepare your heart for an adventure full of peace and charm of this riverside town.
