Riverside Food in Chiang Saen: The taste of life along the Mekong River you must experience

I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to travel to Chiang Saen, an ancient district located by the Mekong River in Chiang Rai Province. This place is not only rich in history or beautiful Mekong River views but also has the charm of riverside food that made me stop for many meals and lose track of time.

Chiang Saen is located near the Golden Triangle, where the Mekong River flows through the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar. The evening atmosphere by the Mekong is refreshing with a cool breeze, perfect for a stroll and finding something to eat by the river. I remember when I arrived in the evening, locals and tourists, including myself, kept visiting the riverside market lined with local food stalls and small shops selling a variety of foods.

The Taste of Food in Chiang Saen: Fresh and flavorful from the Mekong River

One of the dishes I was very impressed with was “Dancing Shrimp” — fresh small river shrimp mixed with a special dipping sauce that is perfectly sweet, sour, and spicy. The shrimp were still moving on the plate. This freshness made me feel the liveliness of the ingredients. This is the charm of riverside food in Chiang Saen.

Besides Dancing Shrimp, grilled snakehead fish with crispy skin and tender meat is a dish I didn’t want to miss. The snakehead fish here has a natural sweet and rich flavor. Eating it with the special Chiang Saen jaew dipping sauce is just perfect. I still remember sitting by the Mekong, enjoying the sunset view while eating — it was a moment that made me feel, “Eating here is just right.”

Riverside Lifestyle and Chiang Saen Evening Food Market

The Chiang Saen riverside market has a unique charm compared to other markets because here you can truly see the lifestyle of the locals. There are vendors selling fresh river products, local goods, and a variety of freshly cooked dishes made to order. I tried the authentic Northern-style spicy fermented fish salad (som tam pla ra) that was so flavorful I had to order a second plate.

Walking around the market in the evening like this reminded me of my trip to Chiang Rai city, where I stayed at a good and affordable hotel in the city center, such as Suknirand Hotel near the Chiang Rai Clock Tower (details available atGood and Affordable Hotels in Chiang Rai City) because it also has similar morning and evening markets. But the riverside atmosphere in Chiang Saen is more special. It’s truly dining that blends nature and local culture.

Recommended Routes and Activities Before or After Eating Riverside Food in Chiang Saen

After enjoying the riverside food, I, mr.hotsia, recommend taking a walk to enjoy the Mekong River view at sunset or renting a bicycle to ride along the river, visiting fishing villages and experiencing the riverside lifestyle. The atmosphere is equally wonderful. You can also visit important temples in Chiang Saen or, if you want to explore nearby attractions, I suggest driving to Doi Chang, not far from Chiang Rai (read my experience atDriving Trip to Doi Chang) or stop by the famous White Temple, Wat Rong Khun (read more atWat Rong Khun, The White Temple of Chiang Rai)
