Taste authentic Southern Thai cuisine at Samila Restaurant, Chiang Rai

When talking about Chiang Rai, many people often think of the beautiful Wat Rong Khun or the cool atmosphere of Doi Chang. But for me, mr.hotsia, another charm not to be overlooked is the "Southern food" with its bold flavors that can be found in this northern city. The restaurant I sincerely want to recommend isSamila RestaurantAn authentic Southern Thai restaurant located in downtown Chiang Rai

When I first arrived in Chiang Rai, I chose to stay atSuknirand Hotelnear the Chiang Rai Clock Tower, which made it very convenient to travel around the city to find delicious food. Samila Restaurant was one of the places I walked to after exploring the morning and evening markets in Chiang Rai city. The restaurant is not far from the accommodation, just a fifteen-minute walk.

Atmosphere and Getting There

Samila is a small restaurant filled with the warm, homely vibe of Southern Thai cuisine. There are both indoor and outdoor tables, creating a relaxed atmosphere like eating at a friend's house. Inside, there are pictures and decorations in a Southern style that tell the story of the food and culture of Southern people. I visited in the evening after strolling through theChiang Rai Walking Street Marketwhich is another activity that mr.hotsia never misses when visiting Chiang Rai.

Must-Try Dishes

Most dishes at Samila focus on the bold flavors typical of Southern food. My favorite dish isSouthern Fish Kidney Curry (Gaeng Tai Pla)with its intense flavor and unique aroma of fish kidney curry paste, fresh vegetables, and crispy fried mackerel, served with hot steamed rice. Another recommended dish isFried Mackerel with Fish Saucecrispy on the outside, tender inside, served with homemade chili fish sauce that is spicy but incredibly delicious.

Additionally, there isCrab Curry Noodleswhich is rich in flavor but not greasy. The crab curry here is loaded with fresh crab meat, served with fresh vegetables and a soft-boiled egg, creating an amazingly harmonious taste. Also, the dishBraised Pork (Moo Hong)is slow-cooked until tender with a rich, perfectly balanced sweet and salty sauce. This is a dish I order every time I visit.

The Difference of Southern Food in Chiang Rai

Although far from the South, the ingredients used at the restaurant are still fresh and of high quality, whether it’s the homemade curry paste or the fresh fish and crab delivered weekly. The flavors are no different from what you might find in the South. I personally feel like I’m back eating at my mother’s home in Samut Sakhon.

Connecting with Chiang Rai Travel

After enjoying the flavorful Southern dishes at Samila, I recommend taking a walk to digest at theChiang Rai Clock Towerwhich is nearby. This clock tower was designed by Ajarn Chalermchai Kositpipat, the creator of Wat Rong Khun, and features an impressive light and sound show in the evening.

For those staying in downtown Chiang Rai and wanting to try other local dishes, I recommend trying duck noodles atP. Duck Noodle San Khi Baoor if you like spicy braised beef, check out Roy Han Restaurant which offers excellent braised beef basil dishes.

Summary of Experience

For mr.hotsia, Samila Restaurant is not just an ordinary Southern Thai restaurant; it represents the warmth and memories of Southern people living in Chiang Rai. It perfectly enriches the flavor diversity of the North. If you visit Chiang Rai and want to try something different from Northern food, be sure to stop by Samila Restaurant. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
