Thap Than Hin, a small town full of charm in Chiang Rai
I, mr.hotsia, have had the chance to drive through Chiang Rai province many times, and on my latest trip, I stopped by Thap Than Hin District. This small district may not be well known to many, but for me, it is a peaceful corner worth exploring, filled with simple village life that is hard to find in the major tourist spots of Chiang Rai.
Thap Than Hin is located not far from Chiang Rai city. It’s only about a 30-kilometer drive from the city center. The drive is comfortable, passing through rice fields and hill tribe villages along the way. I enjoy stopping to take photos of the natural scenery and chatting with locals who still live simply as they always have.
Local Lifestyle and Market
The market in Thap Than Hin is small but full of fresh local food with great flavors. I tried local dishes like som tam with fermented fish, northern chili dip, and hot sticky rice made by the villagers themselves. The market stalls also offer fresh vegetables, seasonal fruits, and daily necessities that reflect the community’s simplicity.
Walking around the market with the locals, I felt like I was experiencing real life that isn’t staged for tourism. I was also met with generosity, smiles, and friendly greetings, which always impress me every time I visit.
Nearby Attractions Not to Miss
If you visit Chiang Rai and want to experience a rustic atmosphere outside the city, Thap Than Hin is another destination I, mr.hotsia, recommend. Besides seeing local life, it can also serve as a convenient base to explore other attractions around Chiang Rai city, such as Wat Rong Khun, the world-famous White Temple, which is not far from the city. You can also drive to Doi Chang, known for its fresh coffee and beautiful views. The route up Doi Changpasses through interesting tribal villages and offers a great atmosphere.
For accommodation in Chiang Rai city, if you plan to stay overnight before or after visiting Thap Than Hin, I have recommended in an articleAffordable and Good Hotels in Chiang Rai Citywhich features budget-friendly and comfortable hotels, such as Suknirand Hotel near the Chiang Rai Clock Tower. If you have time, take a stroll in the evening atChiang Rai Walking Streetto make your trip even more complete.
Food in Thap Than Hin and Around Chiang Rai
Although Thap Than Hin is a small town, its food scene is impressive. Local restaurants here offer delicious dishes that I, mr.hotsia, have tried and loved, such as the intensely flavored braised beef basil. If you want to try the famous duck noodle soup of Chiang Rai, it’s not far from Thap Than Hin. I once stopped byPor Duck Noodle, San Khi Baowhich has a taste so good I have to recommend it.
For coffee lovers, I suggest stopping by Yellow Truck Coffee in Chiang Rai city, another symbol of Chiang Rai that I have written about in an articleYellow Truck Coffee, Clock Tower, Chiang Raiwhere you can relax comfortably before or after visiting Thap Than Hin.
Travel and Overall Atmosphere
The most convenient way to get to Thap Than Hin is by driving from Chiang Rai city. It takes about half an hour along a road with views of rice fields and small mountains all the way. I recommend going in the morning or late afternoon to enjoy cool weather and beautiful light for photography.
Thap Than Hin is perfect for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of Chiang Rai city to breathe fresh air and experience the real village lifestyle that remains well preserved. This place is unlike commercialized tourist spots; here, you will learn about local life and culture in its authentic form.
Summary of mr.hotsia’s Impressions
For me, Thap Than Hin is not just a small district in Chiang Rai but a place that makes me feel close to nature and the traditional way of life of the community. Visiting here feels like recharging my spirit. I get to taste simple home-cooked food full of flavor and care, and talk with locals who have admirably preserved their culture and simplicity.
If you are looking for a different Chiang Rai experience from the main tourist spots like Wat Rong Khun or Doi Chang, Thap Than Hin is the answer I, mr.hotsia, recommend without hesitation.
Don’t forget that Chiang Rai has many other interesting places I have covered in various articles, includingWat Rong Khun, Chiang Rai Clock TowerandChiang Rai Walking Streetwhich complete your travel experience. Although Thap Than Hin is quiet, it is by no means lacking in charm.
