Sky Lanterns @ Baan Tiew Sa Jai, Chiang Khong: A Floating Experience Amidst Community Life
When talking about Chiang Rai, many people probably think of the striking white Wat Rong Khun or the walking street in Chiang Rai city. But this time, mr.hotsia takes you to explore another side of Chiang Rai that few talk about — “Baan Tiew Sa Jai” in Chiang Khong district, where I experienced local sky lanterns in a warm and friendly village atmosphere.
Chiang Khong, located on the east bank of the Mekong River, is peaceful and still preserves the local way of life well. Baan Tiew Sa Jai is a small homestay I had the chance to visit and join the sky lantern activity. The first feeling mr.hotsia got was the simplicity and warmth of the villagers, who welcomed tourists humbly, like visiting distant relatives.
Atmosphere and Travel to Baan Tiew Sa Jai
From Chiang Rai city, I drove north along familiar routes fromDoi ChangTurning onto a small road leading to Chiang Khong, I saw coffee plantations and mountain ranges surrounding the route. This place is not far from the Laos border. The tranquility and natural beauty around perfectly complemented the journey.
Upon arriving at Baan Tiew Sa Jai, I found a simple small homestay with villagers chatting around a campfire. The aroma of local food filled the air. I quickly unpacked and prepared to join the sky lantern activity at night.
Sky Lanterns, Lifestyle, and Meaning in the Chiang Khong Community
The sky lanterns at Baan Tiew Sa Jai are not just about releasing lanterns into the sky for beauty but an activity filled with beliefs and meaning for the locals. I spoke with the homestay owner who explained that these lanterns carry hopes and prayers to the sky for a happy and safe life throughout the year.
Before releasing the lanterns, everyone helps write their wishes on the lanterns with waterproof pens. Seeing dozens of lanterns floating into the dark sky among the stars was a deeply moving sight. It felt like being part of a story bigger than everyday life.
Local Food and Chiang Khong Community Market
After the sky lantern activity, I enjoyed local food at Baan Tiew Sa Jai, focusing on fresh ingredients from the community, such as spicy papaya salad, northern chili dip (Nam Prik Num), and the village’s special grilled pork. Homemade flavors you won’t find in big cities.
The next morning, I woke early to stroll through the Chiang Khong community market. This market isn’t as large as those in Chiang Rai city but has charm with fresh produce, dried goods, and interesting local snacks. I tried mango sticky rice from a small shop whose owner proudly served it, just as I had described in my article.Mango Sticky Rice Ice Cream, Chiang RaiBy myself
