Spicy Sausage @Baan Tiew Sa Jai, Chiang Khong
When talking about Chiang Rai, many people think of the famous Wat Rong Khun or the delicious Khao Soi from roadside stalls. But for mr.hotsia, there is another destination that I admit is just as “exciting”—the spicy sausage atBaan Tiew Sa JaiChiang Khong District, Chiang Rai Province, which I recently experienced fresh and hot and want to share with you openly.
Chiang Khong is a small district bordering Laos, located at the northernmost part of Chiang Rai Province and serves as a gateway to neighboring countries. This location creates a lifestyle rich in cultural diversity and perfectly blended food flavors. mr.hotsia can say that Baan Tiew Sa Jai in Chiang Khong is one of the must-try spots I found and had to stop to taste.
From the Field...An Extraordinary Spicy Sausage
I traveled from Chiang Rai city to Chiang Khong earlier this month, choosing to stay in Chiang Rai city where there are good hotels at affordable prices likeSuknirand Hotellocated next to the Chiang Rai Clock Tower, a viewpoint and important landmark that everyone visiting Chiang Rai must stop by before continuing to Chiang Khong.
The route from Chiang Rai city to Chiang Khong takes about an hour and a half, driving along the main road passing mountains and rice fields. The road is not difficult but filled with natural views and a simple local atmosphere. Upon arriving at Baan Tiew Sa Jai, I was welcomed with smiles and the fragrant aroma of spicy sausages grilling over charcoal.
The sausages here are unlike any I’ve ever tasted because they are seasoned with local herbs and spices that deliver a bold spiciness, yet carry the fragrant notes of turmeric and lemongrass. My first bite revealed a crispy outside and tender inside, with a fiery flavor that awakens the senses. It’s no wonder this place is called “Baan Tiew Sa Jai” (House of Exciting Travel).
Lifestyle and Culture in Chiang Khong
Besides the spicy sausage, Baan Tiew Sa Jai is a homestay that offers tourists a genuine experience of the local lifestyle in Chiang Khong. mr.hotsia had the chance to talk with the homeowner who explained that making spicy sausage is both an art and wisdom passed down in the community. Locals use fresh ingredients from the area, such as home-raised pork, herbs grown in their backyard gardens, and a secret recipe for fermenting the sausage.
I also had the chance to chat with locals about the growing tourism in Chiang Khong. Many said that opening homestays and local restaurants helps the community earn income and preserve traditional culture well—similar to what mr.hotsia has seen in many parts of Chiang Rai, like Doi Chang where coffee is grown and guesthouses welcome visitors.Driving Tour of Doi ChangOffering a close connection to nature and community
