Prakonchai District, Buriram Province: The Perfect Blend of Rural Charm and History
When talking about Buriram Province, many people probably think of Phanom Rung Stone Castle and Muang Tam Castle, which are among the most beautiful and top-ranked ancient sites in Thailand. But for me,mr.hotsia“Prakonchai District” is another impressive destination. With the simple life of the locals and the scent of the vast green rice fields stretching as far as the eye can see, along with historical stories perfectly blended with the lifestyle of the Isan people.
Atmosphere and Lifestyle in Prakonchai District
When I drove into Prakonchai District, the first thing that caught my eye was the “buffaloes” freely roaming the rice fields. Most locals here still raise buffaloes for agricultural work and grazing by the fields. This is a clear contrast to the big cities I have passed through. Stopping to take photos of two or three majestic buffaloes and breathing in the fresh air of the countryside was a small happiness that I see as the true charm of Buriram.
Besides that, I also felt the warmth from the locals here. Although they don’t speak in fancy words, their friendliness and smiles made me feel like part of this small community.
Key Attractions in Prakonchai District
When talking about Prakonchai, many might think ofMuang Tam Castlewhich is located not far from Phanom Rung Stone Castle. This castle is an ancient site of great historical importance to the ancient Khmer people. The name “Muang Tam” comes from the castle being situated at a lower elevation than Phanom Rung Castle, which is the most famous stone castle in Buriram Province.
Visiting here felt like stepping back in time, admiring the beautiful architecture and wanting to understand the meaning of the 15 gates where sunlight shines through during special times of the year, which impressed me greatly. (For more details, you can read atPhanom Rung Stone Castle)
Travel and Accommodation in Prakonchai
Traveling to Prakonchai District is convenient. I traveled by private car from Buriram city, taking about just over an hour. The roads are good and well signposted. There are various accommodation options here. I stayed at Phanom Rung Puri Hotel in nearby Nang Rong District, which is a comfortable stop not far from Prakonchai. (Read more aboutNang Rong District)
Food and Markets in Prakonchai: Local Flavors Not to Miss
After visiting the castles and rice fields, I didn’t miss out on the delicious local food. Prakonchai has many local restaurants serving authentic Isan dishes, such as grilled chicken from Huai Thap Than, with crispy skin and tender meat full of rich flavor, as well as a famous rice porridge restaurant in Nang Rong that I really like.
The morning market in Satuek District, not far from Prakonchai, is another spot I recommend visiting. It’s full of fresh produce and local foods to try, along with the charming and friendly lifestyle of the people. (Read more about Satuek morning market atSatuek Morning Market)
Other Activities and Interesting Places Around Prakonchai District
On this trip, I also visited i-mobile Stadium, or Buriram PEA Stadium, located in Buriram city. This stadium is one of the most modern and largest football stadiums in Thailand. Walking around and experiencing the atmosphere on a non-match day impressed me with the dedication of Buriram people in seriously developing local football.
