Enjoy an exciting trip to Satuek District, Buriram with mr.hotsia

When talking about Buriram Province, many people probably think of Phanom Rung Stone Castle and Muang Tam Castle, which I have shared about in previous articles (Phanom Rung Stone Castle, Muang Tam Castle). But this time, I, mr.hotsia, want to change the atmosphere and visit a small town called "Satuek," a district of Buriram that many might overlook. But if you come like me, I guarantee you will fall in love with the atmosphere and lifestyle here without realizing it.

Satuek District, a small town by the Mun River

Satuek is a district located not far from Buriram city, only about 6 kilometers from Buriram Airport. The town covers an area of about 2x2 kilometers. It is a small town with the Mun River flowing through, creating a peaceful and lush green atmosphere along the riverbanks. I traveled to Satuek this time with a desire to experience the authentic Isan lifestyle. Here, both Isan people and Khmer descendants live together harmoniously. Interestingly, at the Satuek morning market, I heard people speaking Suay language, a rare local language nowadays. This charm makes Satuek different from other places in Buriram.

Satuek Morning Market, a traditional market preserving community ways

One of the places I was very impressed with wasSatuek Morning MarketAlthough many markets in Thailand have developed into indoor markets, Satuek Morning Market still firmly preserves its traditional style. Vendors bring fresh goods and daily necessities freshly caught or harvested to sell on the ground. Some catch crabs and fish to sell fresh. There are plenty of seasonal fruits and vegetables grown locally. I walked through the market and talked with many vendors who spoke the local language fluently. I also noticed many Satuek girls who were cute, cheerful, and very friendly to tourists like me. Anyone who loves authentic markets should not miss this place.

Elephant Merit Festival and Annual Elephant Swimming Competition

Satuek is not just about the market. It is famous for its Elephant Merit Festival and annual elephant swimming competition, a rare tradition in other cities. I had the chance to visit during the Elephant Merit Festival. What fascinated me was the ceremony of making 'Krayasart' dessert, which the locals prepare with great care. This event is full of generosity and the bond between people and elephants. It is not just an elephant show but also tells the story of Satuek people's way of life living harmoniously with these large animals.

Feast at the Night Market and Must-Try Local Food

At night, I did not miss walking around the night market along the main road, Highway 219, which leads to Phayakkhaphum and Maha Sarakham. This market is very lively, with many rice porridge stalls popular among locals. I tried a bowl of hot, flavorful rice porridge at one of the stalls, so delicious I had to recommend it. Anyone who loves simple but spicy Isan flavors should not miss it. There are also made-to-order food stalls, stir-fried basil dishes, and many local snacks that I enjoyed and loved.

Historic Accommodation in the Town Center, Convenient and Worthwhile

For this trip, I chose to stay atPho Ngern Hotelwhich is a historic hotel located right opposite the morning market. Just a few steps out, you reach the night market. The prices are in the hundreds of baht but it is comfortable. Although it looks a bit old, it is still clean and suitable for those who want to experience the true small-town atmosphere. If you want resort-style accommodation by the Mun River, there are options in and outside the town, but I recommend staying in town at Pho Ngern Hotel for more convenience in traveling and finding food.

Connecting Travel and Exploring Buriram More Broadly

For those interested in extending their trip from Satuek, I, mr.hotsia, recommend visiting other important attractions in Buriram Province, such as Phanom Rung Stone Castle and Muang Tam Castle, which are not far away (Phanom Rung Stone Castle, Muang Tam Castle) or driving to Nang Rong District, which I like very much, with its green rice fields and warm local lifestyle (Nang Rong District). Traveling in Buriram is convenient. Buriram Airport is also close to Satuek District. You can rent a car to drive yourself or use public transportation easily.

Summary of the Satuek Travel Experience with mr.hotsia

Satuek is not just a small town to pass by; it has its own charm. From the local lifestyle, unique traditions, a morning market that still preserves its authenticity, to delicious and spicy local food. I, mr.hotsia, am confident that anyone who visits Buriram and does not stop by Satuek misses out on half the flavor of Buriram. Come and experience this town yourself, and you will understand what deep travel really means.
