Phanom Rung Stone Castle: The wonder of the volcano and ancient Khmer art in Buriram
I, Mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to visitBuriram Provincewhich is well known by many for famous politicians and historical tourist attractions such asMuang Tam Castleand the most outstanding is Phanom Rung Stone Castle, which I will tell you about today.
Visiting Phanom Rung Stone Castle this time was a very lucky experience for Mr.hotsia because I came at the time when the sunrise and sunset aligned perfectly with the 15 windows of the castle, a phenomenon that occurs only a few days a year. Although I arrived just one day before the exact date, I witnessed the large, bright red sun setting beautifully and amazingly shining through all 15 windows. I must applaud the ancient wisdom that designed this castle with such profound meaning and exquisite detail.
The charm of Phanom Rung Stone Castle and its hidden history
This castle is located on top of Phanom Rung Hill, an extinct volcano about 200 meters above the plain or 350 meters above sea level. The name "Phanom Rung" comes from the Khmer language meaning "big mountain." The castle was built from beautiful pink sandstone during the 15th to 17th Buddhist centuries as a Hindu Shaivite sanctuary dedicated to Lord Shiva, the supreme deity.
Later, during the reign of King Jayavarman VII of the Khmer Empire, the castle was converted into a Mahayana Buddhist temple, giving it diverse historical and religious significance. I read ancient inscriptions translated by scholars that show the castle was established and restored by several kings, such as King Rajendravarman III and King Jayavarman V, including nobles from the Mahidrapura dynasty, ancestors of King Suryavarman II, the builder of Angkor Wat in Cambodia.
The castle is systematically and meaningfully designed. The layout is arranged in a straight line emphasizing the main sanctuary facing east. At the stairway entrance, there is a building called "Phlab Phla," believed to be a resting place for the king before worshiping the deity. It symbolizes faith and ancient rituals still passed down to this day.
Atmosphere and journey to Phanom Rung Stone Castle
Upon arriving in Buriram, I noticed the difference from other provinces where buffaloes graze naturally in lush green fields. The locals still live simply. I drove past the fields and stopped to photograph a few buffaloes, creating a feeling of closeness to authentic rural life.
Traveling to Phanom Rung Historical Park is very convenient. If you use a private car, there are two main routes from Buriram city. The first route is via Highway 218 heading to Nang Rong for about 50 kilometers, then turn left onto Highway 24 passing Tago and Ta Pek villages for another 26 kilometers to reach the destination. The other route is driving straight to Chaloem Phra Kiat District, which takes about the same time and distance.
Personal experience with tranquility and beauty during the flood season
When I visited, many provinces including Bangkok were experiencing flooding, resulting in very few tourists here. The atmosphere was quiet and private. I was almost the only person walking around the castle that day, hearing only the soft wind and birds flying by, creating a relaxing feeling and a closeness to nature like never before.
When visiting Buriram, don't forget to try local food and explore local markets
After touring the castle, I recommend trying local dishes in Buriram city or Nang Rong District, where there are great restaurants like Koy Mor Oil Kitchen, which I have visited. The flavors are spicy and delicious, especially the deep-fried soft fish with chili sauce and stir-fried basil with stewed beef. This is a great stopover before continuing to other provinces.
If you enjoy a rustic morning market atmosphere, try visitingSatuek Morning Marketwhich is lively and filled with friendly conversations. Here you can experience the local way of life that impressively preserves traditional customs.
Summary of impressions and recommendations for travelers
For me, Mr.hotsia, visiting Phanom Rung Stone Castle is not just about seeing an ancient site but experiencing deep history that tells the story of this region through magnificent art and architecture. I admire the ancient people who created this place with such meaning that the sun precisely passes through the windows.
