Mam Kalasin, deeply delicious to the hearts of locals
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I'll take everyone to taste “Mam Kalasin,” a local dish I tried myself on my latest Isan trip. This Mam is not just an ordinary snack but a dish that clearly reflects the lifestyle and culture of the people of Kalasin.
I arrived in Kalasin after traveling through Cambodia and Laos, passing Ubon Ratchathani and Roi Et until reaching here. Kalasin city has more interesting things than expected. Although it is famous for dinosaurs, what impressed me most was the warmth of the locals and the traditional local food that still retains its authentic flavor.
Pa Tan's Mam shop near Kalasin Bus Terminal
When I arrived in Kalasin, a Facebook friend recommended trying “Mam Somdet,” another district famous for Mam. But due to travel limitations and no private car, I asked locals which Mam shop in town is most popular. The answer was “Pa Tan's shop,” located right next to Kalasin Bus Terminal.
Pa Tan's shop atmosphere looks simple and ordinary, but after tasting, I can say it’s “extraordinary.” The Mam here has a mild flavor, not too spicy, with a fragrant blend of seasonings. I ordered several types, including grilled pork and chicken Mam, tender and flavorful. Eating it with hot sticky rice makes it even more delightful.
Experience the lifestyle through food at Kalasin night market
After enjoying Mam at Pa Tan's, I walked toKalasin Night Marketwhich is not far from the bus terminal. The night market is an indoor market with a high roof and shops arranged around like a food court in a mall. It’s perfect for strolling and enjoying the breeze without worrying about rain or heat. I tried Khao Jee Kalasin, grilled sticky rice dipped in egg, fragrant and delicious enough to buy back to my accommodation.
Besides a variety of food to try, this market shows the real picture of locals, both vendors and tourists strolling around. I like it here because it offers a genuine Kalasin lifestyle experience, perfect for those wanting to eat without tourist traps and at affordable prices.
Kut Nam Kin, a relaxing spot in central Kalasin
One of the places in Kalasin city that impressed me a lot is “Kut Nam Kin,” a large pond and public park where locals come to exercise and relax. I often stop by in the evening. It’s not far from the night market and Pa Tan’s Mam shop.
Near Kut Nam Kin is a famous coffee shop called “Kalafe,” where I once took shelter from the heat, sipping iced coffee and enjoying a moringa oil massage spa. The shop has both air-conditioned and outdoor zones, suitable for those wanting to relax after walking around or tasting local food.
Convenient travel, affordable prices, and memorable flavors
One convenience of eating Mam at Pa Tan's is the shop’s location near Kalasin Bus Terminal, allowing me to comfortably eat before taking a van to Maha Sarakham without worrying about hunger on the way, while experiencing the local atmosphere authentically.
For anyone planning to visitKalasin ProvinceI recommend trying Mam at Pa Tan's at least once. The taste won’t disappoint, and you’ll gain a unique Isan Kalasin culinary experience.
