Elderly People in Bueng Kan Province: A Heartfelt Story from mr.hotsia

I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to visit Bueng Kan, a small province that recently separated from Nong Khai a few years ago, yet it holds a lifestyle and stories as profound as any large province. Visiting here is not just about enjoying nature or visiting temples, but I encountered the life force of the elderly here, which is a key charm of Bueng Kan that many might overlook.

In Bueng Kan town, which is not very large, I strolled around the market and small streets by the Mekong River and met a 97-year-old woman who was surprisingly strong and agile. She is well-known among the locals; anyone passing by would greet or respectfully call her name. The story of the “elderly” in Bueng Kan is not just about advanced age but about their deep connection with the community and a simple lifestyle that still persists.

Bueng Kan: A Unique Mekong Riverside Province

Bueng Kan is a province located along the Mekong River, opposite the Borikhamxay Province of Laos, with the Bueng Kan-Paksan border crossing, which I have written about in an article.Bueng Kan-Paksan Border Crossing: The Thailand-Laos Border in Bueng Kan ProvinceCrossing the river uses local boats familiar with the Mekong River. Although sometimes you have to wait for enough passengers or pay for the whole boat, each trip to Laos offers a different atmosphere while still being close to the lifestyle of the Lao people.

Bueng Kan is not only peaceful with old houses but also has impressive natural and cultural tourist attractions such as Wat Ahong, or the “Navel of the Mekong,” which I have mentioned before.Wat Ahong, the Navel of the MekongHere, the water is calm and deep, allowing you to truly feel the power of the Mekong River. Elderly People of Bueng Kan: Symbols of Strength and Lifestyle

Returning to the elderly I met in Bueng Kan, I want to share that the seniors here are not just old people waiting for time to pass. They still live actively—walking the market, shopping, cooking, or even chatting and exchanging stories with younger generations. I met this elderly woman in the central market who told me she was born and raised in Bueng Kan all her life, witnessing the changes of the town and the Mekong River over decades.

I asked her the secret to staying strong and agile like this. She smiled and said, “Eat good natural food, work hard but don’t stress,” which I strongly agree with because Bueng Kan still has fresh local dishes such asBueng Kan Rice Noodle Soupwhich I tasted and found to be flavorful, or Bueng Kan fried mussel pancake, crispy outside and soft inside, unlike anywhere else in Thailand (you can watch my Bueng Kan fried mussel pancake clip on YouTube).

Cross-Mekong Relationship: Bueng Kan and Paksan

Another impressive aspect is the relationship between the people of Bueng Kan and those across the river in Paksan, Laos, which I wrote about in an article.Paksan RoseThis famous Lao song I had heard before but never knew it was related to the area adjacent to Bueng Kan. The song tells of a beautiful young woman like a “golden rose.” I observed and experienced the people on both sides of the Mekong still share close cultural ties and similar lifestyles.

For the elderly in Bueng Kan, they seem to be a bridge connecting memories between the past and present, both in life experience and living. I, mr.hotsia, believe that sitting and talking with them, listening to their life stories, made this trip more meaningful and profound than ordinary sightseeing.

Travel and Accommodation Recommendations in Bueng Kan

For those interested in visiting Bueng Kan, traveling here is not difficult. There are buses and vans from Nong Khai and nearby provinces regularly. The town itself is not large and easy to stroll around. Accommodations range from budget guesthouses to riverside hotels with great atmospheres, which I have recommended inBueng Kan Riverside Hotelwhich is suitable for relaxing after touring around the province.

If you love nature and want to experience authentic community life, I recommend waking up early to walk the riverside market, taste local food, and watch the elderly in the community walk gracefully and strongly. These are the charms of Bueng Kan that I, mr.hotsia, want everyone to experience firsthand.

Summary

Bueng Kan Province is not only about nature or temples but is also full of stories of elderly people who live valuable and strong lives. They reflect a culture and lifestyle worth studying and learning. I, mr.hotsia, invite everyone to visit this province at least once, and you will realize that the true beauty of Bueng Kan lies in its “elderly people.”
