Tuk-Tuk Ride in Bueng Kan Province with a mr.hotsia travel experience
When talking about traveling in Bueng Kan Province, what mr.hotsia wants everyone to try is riding a tuk-tuk to explore this small town by the Mekong River. Bueng Kan, a small province recently separated from Nong Khai, offers not only nature and history but also a simple and warm local lifestyle.
I started my journey from Khon Kaen to Bueng Kan town by bus. Then, without delay, eager to fully experience the town’s atmosphere, I chose to ride a tuk-tuk which operates widely around the town. Honestly, riding a tuk-tuk here has an indescribable charm. As the tuk-tuk slowly moves along the small road parallel to the Mekong River, I saw old wooden houses nestled among large trees and heard friendly conversations from people along the way more than anywhere else.
The small tuk-tuk, seating about 3-4 people, takes you to important spots in town such as the fresh market full of local food, fresh vegetables, fruits, and interesting souvenirs. Or to simple but clean accommodations likeMae Nam Hotel, Bueng Kan Provincewhich is located by the Mekong River, allowing you to wake up to fresh air and truly beautiful river views.
Local Lifestyle and Fresh Market in Bueng Kan Town
While riding the tuk-tuk, I stopped at the fresh market in the heart of Bueng Kan town. Here, you will see locals buying daily necessities, fresh local vegetables, seasonal fruits, and of course, local dishes like Khao Piak Sen and the famous fried mussel pancake that I have recommended inBueng Kan Khao Piak SenandBueng Kan Fried Mussel Pancakewhich have bold flavors loved by almost all Thai people.
Crispy pork basil stir-fry is another dish I never miss when visiting Bueng Kan. I tasted it at a small roadside shop where the tuk-tuk stopped for me to try. It was so delicious I had to ask for more. If you want to see fresh crispy pork basil stir-fry, check outthis clip.
Tuk-Tuk Ride to Bueng Kan-Pakxan Border Crossing
One of my favorite destinations is riding a tuk-tuk from Bueng Kan town to the Bueng Kan-Pakxan border crossing, about 3-5 kilometers apart. This route is one I highly recommend. Riding a familiar tuk-tuk on small roads is like touring a small rural town with cool breezes passing old houses and green fields.
At this border crossing, I saw the local way of crossing the Mekong River by boat, which ferries people between Thailand and Laos at a friendly price (60 baht per person). Boats run frequently, but avoid the lunch break from 12:00 to 13:30 because the Laos side closes. I once traveled during this time and had to wait in a long boat queue.

Bueng Kan... A Small Mekong Riverside Town Full of Charm
Although Bueng Kan looks quiet and most houses are old wooden ones maintaining traditional lifestyles, the beauty of the Mekong River stretching as a backdrop gives this town a unique charm. I enjoy slowly riding a tuk-tuk, watching people, and chatting with drivers who share stories about the town’s history and nearby attractions like Wat Ahong and the Mekong River’s navel, which I have written about inthis article
. If you have time, don’t forget to visit Phu Tok in Seka District, which is not far from Bueng Kan town. Traveling by tuk-tuk is a great choice to truly experience the local atmosphere and makes me feel like going back in time to live in a small town that still preserves simplicity and nature completely.Read more about Phu Tok here
