Traveling the 3 Southern Border Provinces 8/15: Ko Jiu Hainanese Chicken Rice, Pattani by mr.hotsia
When talking about Pattani, many may think of a southern border town full of history, arts, culture, and ancient mosques. But for me, mr.hotsia, Pattani holds a deeper charm — the stories of local food passed down through generations. One of my favorite dishes that I want to share this time is “Ko Jiu Hainanese Chicken Rice,” a famous restaurant located in the heart of Pattani city, where I had the chance to visit and taste myself.
Ko Jiu Hainanese Chicken Rice is located not far from the fresh market in the city center. The restaurant’s atmosphere is simple, but the customer queue is packed from early morning. I arrived around nine o’clock, and the aroma of chicken rice cooked with broth simmered from chicken bones and local herbs was as inviting as the staff’s warm greetings.
I ordered the regular chicken rice first — soft rice carefully cooked to a beautiful light yellow color, served with tender boiled chicken, large and satisfying pieces. The special Ko Jiu dipping sauce blends fermented soybean paste, fresh chili, and finely sliced ginger, creating a spicy yet balanced flavor that made me lose track of time while enjoying the cozy atmosphere of the restaurant.
What impressed me as much as the food’s taste was the lifestyle of the people in the restaurant and nearby area. I spoke with the owner, a true local, who told me that “Ko Jiu” is the nickname of the grandfather who founded the restaurant and has been selling Hainanese chicken rice for over 50 years. This story is not just about food but about family and community that hold Pattani’s identity together.
After recharging with Ko Jiu chicken rice, I didn’t miss the chance to walk to the nearby fresh market. The atmosphere here was lively, with vendors selling fresh produce, fruits, and a variety of local foods, including spices unique to the southern border. This market visit made me feel like I truly experienced the real life of Pattani people.
For travelers who love to try local food, I recommend stopping by to tastePattani Rad Naa famous restaurant in the same area. Or if you want to try a dish with a bit more intense flavor,Pattani Rad Na at Nam Ros Restaurantis an option I’ve tried and was impressed with. Also, if you are interested in learning about the lifestyle and important sites in Pattani, don’t forget to visitKrue Se Mosqueor Sultan Muzaffar Shah Mosque, an ancient mosque that deeply reflects the history and culture of the area.
I must say that my trip to the 3 southern border provinces as mr.hotsia was not just about seeing the city’s sights but experiencing the real tastes and atmosphere of the people here closely. Ko Jiu Hainanese Chicken Rice is one of the experiences I intend to keep in my heart for a long time.
