Discovering the Way of Life in Chachoengsao: Phanom Sarakham Morning Market

Chachoengsao, the province where I, mr.hotsia, grew up and absorbed the lifestyle since childhood, a destination I often frequent. Not just the well-known floating markets or famous temples, but this time I intend to take you to experience another charm of this city: the Phanom Sarakham Morning Market, a market that still preserves simplicity and the true way of life of the locals beyond just ordinary trading.

I set off early in the morning from downtown Chachoengsao, driving along the Bang Pakong River on familiar roads, passing lush orchards and farms. The lively atmosphere of the morning market became clear as I entered Phanom Sarakham district, with the bustling sounds of people shopping mixed with the fragrant aroma of local food filling the air.

This morning market is not large but is a local market where villagers sincerely sell fresh produce, seasonal fruits, and traditional foods. I walked past fresh vegetable stalls harvested from nearby gardens, saw elderly people smiling and chatting loudly and clearly. The atmosphere was warm like an old home without the rush of a big city.

Breakfast here is just as excellent as anywhere else. I didn’t miss ordering a hot, flavorful rice porridge freshly made by the vendor, accompanied by crispy, freshly fried deep-fried dough sticks. There’s also a boat noodle shop serving the original Chachoengsao recipe at affordable prices. The scent of spices and rich broth reminded me of childhood memories eating boat noodles by the canal in front of my house.

This market is also where I discovered rare local specialties few know about, such as salted crab at the market behind Luang Pho Sothon Temple, famous for its unique and delicious taste. Locals sell various types of salted crab fresh, and I just learned that Chachoengsao salted crabs come in many varieties and flavors waiting for lovers of local cuisine to try.

While walking through the market, Phanom Sarakham’s morning was still bustling with local goods and spices found only in this area, such as shrimp paste chili sauce, traditional fermented fish sauce, and rare local vegetables. I chatted with local vendors, hearing stories of their origins and lifestyles that continue traditionally, which was impressive.

After a satisfying meal and shopping, I stopped to pay respects atLuang Pho Sothon Templewhich is not far away. This temple is the spiritual center of people in Chachoengsao province, like the beginning and end point of a journey filled with warmth and faith. I, mr.hotsia, have previously shared in an article about how the atmosphere around this temple was in the past. Returning here still makes me feel like coming home.

Then, if time allows, I usually visitthe Giant Rahu Statueandthe Stainless Steel Church at Wat Hua ThungTwo places that perfectly add color to the lifestyle and culture trip of Chachoengsao. If you haven’t been, try stopping by. The atmosphere is peaceful and beautiful, especially the stainless steel church, which is a unique landmark of this province.

For lunch, I usually choose to dine atMaturot Riverside Restaurantan old restaurant by the Bang Pakong River. Anyone visiting Luang Pho Sothon must not miss this place. Fresh and delicious food with a river view stretching along the Bang Pakong River and its bridge completes the authentic local dining experience. The grilled river prawns here are large and sweet, the pork satay is flavorful, and the salted crab curry is the restaurant’s special recipe. I have shared in an old article that these flavors are truly unique.

If you want to experience a deep travel journey in Chachoengsao, I, mr.hotsia, recommend you visit the Phanom Sarakham Morning Market yourself. See the genuine local lifestyle and traditional foods waiting for you to discover. Don’t just be an ordinary tourist but a traveler who truly feels the spirit of this city.
