Luang Pho Phra Sai, Wat Pho Chai, Nong Khai: The Sacred Buddha and Stories Across the Mekong
I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to visit Nong Khai Province, a city that is not only the gateway to Laos but also full of deep stories and culture. One of the important landmarks I did not miss wasWat Pho Chaiwhich houses “Luang Pho Phra Sai,” a Buddha image highly revered by the people of Nong Khai and Buddhists nationwide.
The story of Luang Pho Phra Sai is very interesting because this Buddha image originated from Laos. It was created along with Phra Suk and Phra Serm. These three Buddha images were made on the Laos side, but during the ceremony of bringing the Buddhas from Laos to Bangkok, an unexpected event occurred: the raft carrying all three Buddhas sank in the Mekong River. One Buddha sank with the water, while the other, whose cart broke down in Nong Khai, was Phra Sai. This made Luang Pho Phra Sai a Buddha image imbued with sacredness and stories deeply connected to the Mekong River.
Upon arriving at Wat Pho Chai, what caught my eye was not only the majestic large Buddha image but also the beautiful and unique murals. Here, a contemporary painting style is used to depict the stories of Nong Khai Province, blending past and present perfectly. These paintings are not just art but also clearly narrate the history of Phra Sai and the lifestyle of the local community. This difference appealed to me because it made me feel like I was traveling back in time to experience the real way of life of Nong Khai people through different eras.
Besides paying respect to Luang Pho Phra Sai, I also recommend exploring Wat Pho Chai thoroughly because this temple is like the spiritual center of Nong Khai people and a great starting point for exploring other attractions in the city. As I mentioned inmy article on traveling in Nong Khaithe best travel route is from Wat Pho Chai toSala Kaew Kuthen to the stupa in the middle of the water, ending the trip at Tha Sadet Pier Market, which is full of food and lively riverside atmosphere.
Atmosphere and Lifestyle Around Wat Pho Chai
Visiting Wat Pho Chai is not just about making merit or admiring the beauty of the Buddha image but also a great opportunity to experience the simple and warm lifestyle of Nong Khai locals. Around the temple, there is a small market selling local food and daily necessities. I tried local dishes at a street food stall near the temple, which tasted great and gave me the feeling of dining with locals.
During my visit, Nong Khai still attracted both Thai and Lao tourists crossing the border to admire the temple’s beauty and pay respect to Luang Pho Phra Sai continuously. This reflects the close relationship between the two sides of the Mekong and the faith in Phra Sai, which is not only a sacred object but also a symbol of cultural and historical bonds.
Connecting to Nearby Interesting Attractions
After experiencing the sacredness of Luang Pho Phra Sai at Wat Pho Chai, I recommend continuing your trip toSala Kaew Kualso known as Wat Khaek, a place with valuable sculptural art and an atmosphere distinctly different from Wat Pho Chai. Here, Dharma and philosophy are hidden within fascinating artworks.
Additionally, if you have more time, I suggest driving or taking a tuk-tuk toSangkhom Districta small district with beautiful nature, especially the sand dunes along the Mekong River, which impressed me greatly when I walked there. The peaceful atmosphere with an endless Mekong River view is perfect for those wanting to escape the hustle and truly connect with nature.
