Travel Phon Phisai with mr.hotsia: A small riverside town waiting for you to discover
I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to visitPhon Phisaia small district in Nong Khai province that many may know as the town famous for the grand Naga Fireball festival. But I visited during the off-season, which allowed me to see Phon Phisai from a quiet perspective, the simple lifestyle of the people living by the Mekong River, and the charming local town atmosphere.
Phon Phisai: A Mekong riverside town that’s more than just the Naga Fireballs
Phon Phisai is widely talked about during the end of Buddhist Lent festival because it is the place with the most Naga Fireball phenomena in Thailand. Tourists from all over flock to watch, filling the streets, hotels, and causing heavy traffic. But this time I chose to travel outside that period, so I experienced the peacefulness of the town by the Mekong filled with the daily life of locals who still make a living and maintain traditional ways.
Walking along the Mekong River, you will find a large and beautiful Naga statue standing tall, which is a popular photo spot and a symbol of this town. There is also a Thai-Lao market located on the riverbank within Phon Phisai municipality, open only on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 6 AM to 1 PM. This market is full of local products including vegetables, fruits, and food that perfectly blend Thai and Lao cultures.
Comfortable and affordable accommodation in the heart of Phon Phisai
For accommodation in Phon Phisai, I chose to stay atBoonthawee Hotelwhich is located opposite Rim Fang Khong Hotel, near Phon Phisai Post Office. This hotel has both old and new sections, clean rooms, and costs only 400 baht per night. The internet is also quite fast, allowing me to work online comfortably. When I visited, prices were similar at other accommodations in town, not expensive even during the Naga Fireball festival or winter season. It’s very good value and convenient for travelers who want to stay in the town center.
Food and recommended restaurants by mr.hotsia
In Phon Phisai, I tried breakfast at "Ocha" restaurant, a local eatery with bold flavors that I really liked. I recommend anyone coming here to stop by and try it. Dinner in town is a bit harder to find, but I found a small noodle shop near Bangkok Bank that was delicious and affordable. It’s a place I was very impressed with.
For those who enjoy beer or want to try local spirits, someone recommendedSuan Por Ta Restauranton Route 212, a spot where local men gather to chat and relax. It’s an atmosphere that truly lets you experience community life.
And don’t forget to buyPhon Phisai Chinese Sausageas a souvenir. The sausages here are freshly made, tender, fragrant, and very delicious. I tried them and loved them very much.
Attractions in Phon Phisai and nearby areas
Besides the riverside atmosphere and local market, I recommend visitingLuang Pho Yai, Wat Thai Phon Phisaia large Buddha statue highly revered by locals. There is alsoNaga Cavewhich is fascinating for those who love nature and local folklore.
If you have more time, don’t miss exploring Sangkhom District which is not far away (Travel Sangkhom District). There you’ll find beautiful Mekong River views with long sand dunes to walk on and an atmosphere different from big cities. I think Sangkhom is becoming another interesting destination for nature-loving travelers.
