Travel to Sangkhom District, Nong Khai Province with mr.hotsia

When talking about Nong Khai Province, many people probably think of the famous Naga Fireballs or Sala Kaew Ku, but for me, mr.hotsia, there is another impressive and intriguing place, which isSangkhom DistrictA Thai-Lao border district located beyond Si Chiang Mai District towards Loei Province. Along the Mekong River bank, this place offers nature and a way of life that remains simple and beautiful in a way not many tourists know.

The route to Sangkhom District is one I really like because along the way you will see the Mekong River stretching alongside sand dunes formed on the riverbank. This is a rare sight in many provinces along this river. For me, walking on the sandy beach by the Mekong River in Sangkhom during January is the best time. The water level in the Mekong drops, making the sandy beach clearly visible and beautiful. The clear winter sky makes the photos I take lively and warm.

One of my favorite spots in Sangkhom is a small cliff curving along the sandy riverbank of the Mekong. The Mekong flows gently all the time, causing the sand on the bank to collapse into the water periodically. I once spent a long time walking along the sand and flicking sand into the water. The atmosphere was indescribably wonderful. Experiencing the peace and small natural changes here made me feel connected to the true essence of life.

Travel and Accommodation

Traveling to Sangkhom District is not difficult. If you drive from Nong Khai city, passing Si Chiang Mai District, then follow the Mekong River, this route passes through small charming districts like Sangkhom. However, I must say that Sangkhom is not yet visited by many Thai tourists. Most visitors are foreigners who appreciate peace and genuine nature.

Accommodation in Sangkhom is limited, mostly small guesthouses. I have stayed in one with a very nice atmosphere, close to the community and local way of life. If anyone wants to experience the simplicity and warmth of this district, I recommend booking accommodation in advance, especially during the winter season when tourists start discovering its beauty.

Riverside Lifestyle and Local Food

Sangkhom is a small district that still preserves the simple lifestyle of people living by the Mekong River very well. I had the chance to talk with locals, most of whom are fishermen and farmers. The quiet and unhurried atmosphere compared to big cities made me feel relaxed and gave me more time to think.

If you visit Nong Khai, don’t forget to try the famous Isan and Vietnamese food nearby, such as the restaurantDaeng Nam Neunglocated in Nong Khai city. Their Nam Neung menu is nationally recognized for its delicious and clean taste. Also, there is a coffee shop calledJintara Coffeewhere I like to sit and sip coffee while enjoying the Mekong River view.

Connecting Travel and Nearby Attractions

If you want to fully explore Nong Khai Province, Sangkhom District is one of the destinations I, mr.hotsia, recommend including in your travel plan. Not far from here is the famous attractionSala Kaew Kuor Wat Khaek, which features interesting art and culture. You can also continue to other districts such asPhon Phisaiwhich is another famous spot for the Naga Fireballs.

Traveling to Sangkhom District is like opening a door to the peaceful and genuine nature of Nong Khai, different from the lively city image full of tourists. I, mr.hotsia, love the feeling here because it lets me experience the true life by the Mekong River in a way that can’t be found elsewhere.

Hope and Future of Sangkhom District

When talking about the future of tourism in Sangkhom District, I, mr.hotsia, believe it has great potential. If developed properly and its natural beauty preserved, Sangkhom could become a popular tourist destination like Pai or Chiang Khan in the past. Both places started with foreign tourists and later became known to Thai tourists.

Currently, Sangkhom remains a place of peace and raw beauty, which is a rare advantage nowadays. I, mr.hotsia, hope to see it grow sustainably with environmentally conscious tourists who love nature. I eagerly await that day.

Summary

Traveling to Sangkhom District, Nong Khai Province, is an experience I, mr.hotsia, recommend for nature lovers and slow travel enthusiasts. The beauty of the sand dunes by the Mekong River, the simple lifestyle of locals, and the peaceful atmosphere not easily found in big cities are charms that make me want to visit again.

If you are looking for a destination different from the main routes in Nong Khai, don’t forget to visit Sangkhom District and let your heart flow with the Mekong River and the warm peacefulness like your own home.
