Enjoy traveling in Sakon Nakhon, a small city full of vibrant colors and authentic lifestyles
Sakon Nakhon, a small city that I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to experience myself, I must say the city center is much smaller than I had imagined. The city covers only about 4 square kilometers, but the charm is not in its size. It lies in the authentic Isan way of life and the tourist spots rich with deep historical and cultural stories.
Sakon Nakhon is located by Nong Han, a large lake approximately 6 kilometers wide and 12 kilometers long. Nong Han is not just an ordinary water source but a recreational spot for locals. I saw villagers fishing, rowing boats, and enjoying peaceful evening activities. Nong Han differs from Nong Han in Kumphawapi, Udon Thani, especially in the spelling using ร. and น. Phra That Choeng Chum, the first must-visit destination
If you come to Sakon Nakhon and don’t stop byPhra That Choeng ChumIt’s like you haven’t really arrived. This site is located almost by the edge of Nong Han, on Rueang Sawat Road, the main street of the city. I stayed at a small apartment on this road, just a few minutes’ walk to Phra That Choeng Chum. There are many accommodations around here, starting from about 400-500 baht, but I found one for 600 baht, slightly more expensive than others, probably due to convenience and location.
Phra That Choeng Chum is an ancient stupa nearly a thousand years old, built to enshrine the golden crown relic of King Suwannaphingkara. This stupa is also a spiritual center for Buddhists in Sakon Nakhon and nearby areas. I sat quietly enjoying the morning atmosphere by Nong Han, watching locals and tourists respectfully pay homage. It’s a feeling unlike anywhere else.
Lifestyle and Morning Market in Sakon Nakhon
One morning in Sakon Nakhon, I chose to walk through the morning market, a small but lively place. I strolled among fresh produce and food stalls and tried street curry rice at a price perfect for travelers. It was a simple breakfast filled with the warmth of local life.
After that, I took a tricycle ride, which is still easy to find and affordable in Sakon Nakhon. Riding through the city in the cool morning breeze, the tricycle passed old houses and schools where children were heading to class. It reflected the simplicity and genuine community ties of this town. I recommend visitors try this experience because it offers a different perspective of the city and supports the local community. Delicious Eats in Sakon Nakhon with Must-Try Isan Dishes
Isan food in Sakon Nakhon is especially outstanding, particularly the duck larb dish. I had the chance to eat at a small duck larb shop, a tiny place but incredibly flavorful. The taste is spicy and authentic Isan style, perfect for those who love spicy food and fresh herbal aromas.
Another dish I didn’t miss was Tai Yong Noodles. This shop is located at coordinates 17°09'38.7"N 104°09'10.7"E. You can use these coordinates to find it on Google Maps. Tai Yong Noodles are special for their rich broth, fresh clean offal, and the roasted chili peppers that add perfect heat and aroma. I ordered extra stewed beef; the flavor was so balanced and unforgettable. Anyone visiting Sakon Nakhon must try it. Accommodation and Transportation in Sakon Nakhon
I stayed at a small apartment on Rueang Sawat Road, which is ideal for travelers wanting to stay near Phra That Choeng Chum and conveniently walk around the city. There are many hotels and accommodations ranging from budget to mid-range. This place suits those who want to experience the city slowly and peacefully, like stepping into a small town full of charm.
For getting around the city, besides the tricycle I recommended, regular buses or motorcycle taxis are also easy to find. I traveled from my accommodation to the morning market by tricycle, which was the most memorable experience of this trip because I truly saw the lifestyle of Sakon Nakhon people—from taking kids to school to shopping in the market like locals.
Sakon Nakhon, a city beyond just tourism
Sakon Nakhon may not be a large city or a famous tourist destination, but for me, mr.hotsia, it is a city full of sincerity, a lifestyle that still breathes true Isan spirit, and important historical sites like Phra That Choeng Chum. It also offers delicious, satisfying food and a morning market full of local community charm.
