Pro Fish Trap Thailand: Unemployed but not afraid of starving... The Foolish Fish Trap

Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I'll take you deep into the lifestyle of people who choose “fish trapping” as a way to survive in these volatile economic times. Many might think this job is outdated or simple, but if you experience it firsthand, you'll realize that “The Foolish Fish Trap” is actually the smart way to survive and not fear unemployment nowadays.

I traveled to a little-known fish trapping area in Thailand, a place that still preserves the traditional way of life of villagers who rely mainly on fish for food and income. Many in this community faced unemployment from the industrial sector or the sluggish tourism industry, but they are not afraid of starving because they have “Pro Fish Trap” — cleverly designed and highly efficient fish traps.

I spoke with Mr. Somchai, a villager who has lived with fish trapping all his life. He said that during the quiet times at the fish market in Hatien Province (I once stayed there, see my review atHatien Province), fishermen return to using this traditional fish trapping method because it requires low investment and yields fresh fish daily, which can be sold or kept for personal consumption.

These fish traps come in various types, but my favorite and the most effective is the “cone-shaped fish trap” made from natural materials. It has an entrance that fish can enter but cannot exit. It’s not just an ordinary trap but a professional trap that villagers have improved and developed based on real experience.

By the riverside atmosphere, I witnessed the simple yet resilient lifestyle of the villagers. They set out to trap fish at dawn while the water is still cold and mist floats above it. Some told me, “Fishing is not just about making a living but preserving the community’s way of life and wisdom passed down through generations.”

Lifestyle and Fish Market in Hatien Province

Hatien Province is a place I had the chance to visit for just one night. I stayed at Binh Minh Hotel, located opposite Coop Mart mall, which is an affordable accommodation suitable for backpackers (if anyone is interested in how to prepare for backpacking in my style, check outIndependent Travel Preparation)

). The fish market here is a very interesting highlight. I saw a variety of fresh freshwater fish neatly displayed. Some shops even sell fresh tea leaves, a local culture of boiling fresh tea leaves unlike the dried tea we are familiar with. The people here have a strong bond with nature and natural food, perfectly fitting their village lifestyle.

People here speak Lao because of close ties with Lao workers and tourists. I also had the chance to ride a tuk-tuk around town and taste the delicious pork leg sausage, a signature dish of the Hatien market.

Fish Trapping and Lifestyle Tourism

Many visitors to Hatien Province might never have thought that this small community could have such professional fish trapping. For me, seeing professional fish trapping by locals was very inspiring, and I want everyone to truly learn about the lifestyle, not just pass through as tourists.

If you enjoy independent travel where you can change plans freely, try visiting here. You’ll gain knowledge and new experiences while enjoying fresh and clean local fish markets and traditional food. I recommend watching my YouTube video titledPro Fish Trap Thailand: Unemployed but not afraid of starving... The Foolish Fish Trapto get a clearer picture.

Travel and Continuous Tourism Recommendations

If you are a traveler who loves freedom and wants to change the atmosphere from big cities, I suggest combining this trip with visiting Hatien Province. If you like mountains or nature, check out my tripTraveling Tam Dao, Vietnamwhich I have written about, to experience cool weather and peaceful nature.

This is another backpacking style I like because we learn the real culture and lifestyle of locals, not just taking beautiful photos and leaving. Professional fish trapping in Thailand is the real life I want everyone to experience.
