Hà Tĩnh Province: A small city full of life and unique flavors
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I'll take you to experience real life in Hà Tĩnh Province, a small city located in Vietnam, not far from the Laos and Thailand borders. My journey here was full of impressive stories and a blend of lifestyles perfectly combining Vietnamese, Lao, and Thai cultures.
Travel and Accommodation in Hà Tĩnh City
I, mr.hotsia, stayed here for just one night but was very impressed. The hotel I chose is called “Binh Minh Hotel,” located opposite the Coop Mart mall, which is very convenient for tourists who want to stroll and shop in the evening. The room price is very affordable, about 400 baht per night. Importantly, most hotels in this city are reasonably priced, suitable for travelers who want to save money but still enjoy comfort.
Local People and Diverse Cultures
Here, I met many Hà Tĩnh locals who are very familiar with the Lao people because there are many tourists and workers from Laos. I spoke with several locals using a mix of Lao and Thai languages, creating a warm and close atmosphere without realizing it. Some had worked in Laos before and spoke Lao fluently. While eating fried chicken at Coop Mart, I even met Lao friends dining together, making me feel like I was visiting a friend's home.
Exploring the City by Cyclo and Tasting Must-Try Vietnamese Stuffed Pork Knuckle
I explored the city by cyclo to experience the atmosphere and real lifestyle of Hà Tĩnh people. Riding a cyclo allowed me to see the lively fresh markets, roadside coffee shops, and local restaurants up close. One of the must-try dishes was “Vietnamese stuffed pork knuckle,” which has a rich and unique flavor unlike anything I've tasted before. Additionally, Hà Tĩnh market is a source of fresh freshwater fish and fresh tea leaves that locals like to boil and drink fresh, unlike the dried tea leaves we usually know.
Diverse Local Lifestyle and Food
The food in this city is outstanding and very distinctive. Besides the highlight stuffed pork knuckle, there is also roasted duck that I really liked. Noodle shops and bánh mì (Vietnamese baguette) lined along the streets offer a wide variety. Several Vietnamese-style coffee shops add to the city’s charm, making it a cultural crossroads of Vietnamese, Thai, and Lao cuisines.
Moreover, I heard from friends on Facebook that Hà Tĩnh Province has the highest number of Vietnamese workers in Thailand. I met many who speak Thai and Lao fluently, including a Vietnamese woman who had worked in Laos for several years and now runs a noodle shop here. This made me feel that this city is not just an ordinary small town but a fascinating hub of people and cultures connected together.
Markets and Local Fresh Tea Drinking
Hà Tĩnh market is another spot I highly recommend visiting. Besides its lively atmosphere, it offers plenty of local products, including fresh freshwater fish and fresh tea leaves that locals prefer to boil and drink fresh. This is different from the dried tea we usually see. These fresh tea leaves have a unique taste and aroma, like an herbal refreshment. I tried it myself and was very impressed.
mr.hotsia’s Travel Tips for Hà Tĩnh
For those interested in visiting Hà Tĩnh, I, mr.hotsia, recommend preparing for independent travel (read more atIndependent Travel Preparation, Solo Travel, Backpacking) because this city is perfect for slow strolling, tasting food, and chatting with locals in a friendly manner. Also, staying at an affordable hotel like Binh Minh Hotel opposite Coop Mart will give you comfortable accommodation and easy access to transportation.
For nature and culture lovers, I suggest extending your trip to Tam Dao Peak in Vinh Phuc Province (read the review atTraveling Tam Dao, Vietnam (tam dao Vietnam)), which is not far from Hà Tĩnh. It’s a beautiful resting spot with great weather.
Travel Summary
Hà Tĩnh is a city I, mr.hotsia, find suitable for those who enjoy chill travel, love tasting local food, and want to experience the genuine lifestyle of friendly Vietnamese people who are open to foreign tourists, especially Thai and Lao visitors and workers. The city offers convenient travel, affordable accommodation, and delicious food, leaving me impressed and eager to return.
If you like independent travel and want unique new experiences, Hà Tĩnh Province is a very interesting choice.
