Theiler House (Ban Thai Lue) – A lifestyle still carrying the true essence of the Tai Lue people
I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to travel and experience the way of life of the Tai Lue people at Ban Sri Don Chai, Chiang Khong District, Chiang Rai Province. This is considered one of the Tai Lue villages that has preserved its original traditions most firmly and deeply in Thailand. This trip was not just sightseeing but an immersion into the real life of the Tai Lue people, who continue to follow the footsteps of their ancestors without fear of the modern world.
Theiler House here is not just a tourist spot but feels like a home warmly and sincerely welcoming visitors. I stayed in a traditional wooden homestay that still preserves the elevated wooden structure, thatched roof, and simple interior decoration full of Tai Lue cultural stories.
Walking around the village and untouched way of life
Walking around Ban Sri Don Chai was a very impressive experience. Each house still retains the ancient style that is rare nowadays. I passed through beautifully carved Tai Lue wooden gates, vegetable gardens grown by locals for household use, and saw villagers crafting traditional handicrafts such as Tai Lue weaving using original tools.
In the morning, I had the chance to sit and talk with elders who shared the history of the Tai Lue people and the preservation of culture that is hard to find nowadays. Listening to the melodious and meaningful Lue language made me feel like I traveled back in time to experience the true Thai identity of the past.
Tai Lue local cuisine – the authentic taste of Chiang Rai
One of the charms of Theiler House that I really liked was the local food, which is completely different from elsewhere. I tasted authentic Tai Lue dishes such as Nam Prik Noom (young chili dip) with just the right spiciness, served with fresh vegetables grown in the village, freshly steamed sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves, and Kaeng Khae Gai (herbal chicken curry) with its unique herbal aroma.
The food here is not just something to eat but tells stories of local wisdom and the deep relationship between people and nature. I recommend anyone interested in real village life to stop by and taste the food here before strolling around the village atmosphere.
