Travel to Thu Dau Mot, a small city in Binh Duong Province
Hello readers, I am mr.hotsia. I had the chance to visit Thu Dau Mot, the capital city of Binh Duong Province in Vietnam. Let me share an in-depth experience with you. This city is located about 31 kilometers north of Ho Chi Minh City, which is not far for those who want to experience rural life and a quiet small town, unlike typical tourist cities.
I traveled from Ho Chi Minh City's Northern Bus Station by bus to Thu Dau Mot bus station, which is next to a medium-sized Co.opmart in the city. If you get off here and walk out of the bus station, turn left to enter the city center. If you don't want to walk far, you can easily hire a motorbike taxi. Travel is convenient, but buses are not very frequent because this city is not a main destination for general tourists.
City Atmosphere and Accommodation in Thu Dau Mot
Thu Dau Mot features small hills mixed with flat areas and banana groves scattered throughout the city. Most locals still raise chickens and engage in simple agriculture. I chose to stay in an affordable accommodation surrounded by banana groves in the community, which felt more peaceful and natural than staying in a hotel downtown. Although not luxurious or very comfortable, it offered a genuine local lifestyle experience.
There are few hotels here and not as many options as in larger tourist cities, but it is sufficient for travelers who enjoy a simple atmosphere and dislike crowds. The city itself is quiet with few foreign tourists, which for me is one of Thu Dau Mot's charms.
Lifestyle and Culture in Binh Duong Province
Speaking of Binh Duong Province, where Thu Dau Mot is the capital, I want to briefly introduce the province to give a clearer picture of the city. This province is located north of Ho Chi Minh City, bordering Binh Phuoc Province to the north and Dong Nai Province to the east.Binh Duong ProvinceIt is also known as a center for wood carving, pottery, ceramics, and famous plaster sculptures. These products are exported to France and other countries in the region.
Additionally, Binh Duong has a nationally renowned football team that won league championships in 2007 and 2008, showing the province's active cultural and sports scene. All of this makes Binh Duong more than just a small city; it is a province with rich cultural roots and an interesting community.
Markets and Local Food in Thu Dau Mot
Regarding food, I, mr.hotsia, must say that the Vietnamese cuisine here is flavorful and uses fresh local ingredients. The fresh market in Thu Dau Mot is a place where I truly experienced the community atmosphere, with fresh vegetables, fruits, and seafood sold by locals.
If you want to try some dishes that impressed me, I recommendGrilled Button Squidwhich is a popular seafood dish in Vietnam with a sweet, tender, and savory flavor, grilled until fragrant. Or if you prefer rice dishes, tryVietnamese Chicken Biryaniwhich has aromatic spices and juicy, tender chicken. There is alsoNem Phanga delicious sweet and sour fermented dish that I tried at the local market and really enjoyed.
Travel and Route Recommendations
For travelers interested in visiting Thu Dau Mot, I recommend taking a bus from Ho Chi Minh City toThu Dau Mot Bus Stationwhich is a key connection point in the city. Travel is quite convenient and straightforward. If you want to continue to Binh Phuoc Province or Dong Xoai city, you can take connecting buses from this station.Bus Schedule and Additional InformationI have collected photos and information to help you plan your trip.
After resting in Thu Dau Mot for a night, I continued to Binh Phuoc Province, which has a different nature and culture. Visiting Thu Dau Mot is like a starting point for exploring the northern part of southern Vietnam, which is very interesting.
Summary of Impressions from mr.hotsia
Thu Dau Mot is not a city familiar to or frequently visited by tourists, but for me, mr.hotsia, it is another side of Vietnam that still preserves naturalness and local lifestyle clearly. The quiet atmosphere, green banana groves, and people living simply are things you won’t find in big cities like Ho Chi Minh City.
For those who like to travel unhurriedly and want to learn about real local culture and lifestyle, I recommend visiting Thu Dau Mot at least once. I guarantee you will find peace and a unique experience.
