Cruising from Rach Gia to Ca Mau, an unmissable southern Mekong River experience
When talking about Cà Mau province, located at the southernmost part of Vietnam and part of the Mekong Delta, locally called the Mekong Delta, traveling by boat betweenRach Giaand Ca Mau city is an experience I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend everyone to try for themselves.
This route doesn’t take you out to sea but offers a vibrant journey along canals and rivers deeply woven into the lifestyle of the Vietnamese people. I spent about 3-4 hours on a fast boat with a roof and a powerful engine, allowing us to travel quickly and comfortably throughout the trip.
Along both sides of the canal, I saw wooden houses lining the banks, a rural atmosphere that remains strongly traditional. Locals still use boats as their main means of transportation and trade. There were sand and stone cargo boats floating downstream, while wood and charcoal cargo boats traveled upstream. It felt like watching real-life scenes of a riverside community that remains fascinating and charming, even more so than traveling by car.
The fare for this route is about 120,000 dong, or around 180 baht, which is very affordable considering the views and experience you get. If you want to experience an authentic local atmosphere, this is a choice mr.hotsia strongly recommends not to miss.
Riverside Lifestyle and Fresh Market in Ca Mau City
If you visit Ca Mau city, don’t forget to stop byCa Mau Fresh Marketlocated by the river. This market clearly shows the relationship between people and the river. Large cargo boats I saw are still widely used, carrying fresh fruits from gardens to sell at the market. Pomelos, bananas, and various vegetables are transported from nearby canals.
Additionally, the market is full of fresh seafood caught by locals, including Ca Mau salted fish, which resembles the salted fish from Bang Bo in my hometown but is not head-cut and has a unique flavor worth trying. Although I, mr.hotsia, haven’t tasted it myself yet, I recommend it for seafood lovers and those interested in the local culinary evolution in this area.
Pier and Preparation Before Departure
The pier I used to travel from Rach Gia is not far from the central market of Ca Mau city. It is a convenient pier with coffee shops, restaurants, and local-style restrooms available. For those interested in traveling by boat from Rach Gia to Ca Mau, you can check details and schedules fromCa Mau Passenger Pier Informationwhich I have written about previously.
The boats in service are fast boats with roofs that provide good protection from sun and rain. I recommend bringing comfortable clothes and a sun hat because even with a roof, the midday sun can be quite intense.
Cruising to Experience the True Riverside Lifestyle
Along the boat route, I, mr.hotsia, witnessed the authentic riverside lifestyle of Southern Vietnamese people. It’s not just about enjoying beautiful views but learning about the world of people who use waterways as their main life route — fishing, trading, traveling by various types of boats, and transporting goods like stone, sand, wood, and charcoal mainly by water.
I felt like I traveled back in time to a daily life that is not hectic like in big cities and saw the peace that still exists in local areas despite the world changing so much.
From Ca Mau, Continuing to Other Cities and Nearby Attractions
If you have more time, Ca Mau is also a great starting point for traveling toDat Muia small town at the southernmost tip of Vietnam, offering a truly peaceful rural atmosphere. Or you can choose to travel by boat from Ca Mau toCan Thoa major city in the Mekong Delta, another interesting and lively route.
I, mr.hotsia, believe that the boat routes in this zone still hold unique charm and character. If you have the chance, try this kind of boat trip once before roads and cars become more accessible, as these boat services may gradually disappear over time.

It is an experience I, mr.hotsia, am proud to have and want to share with all travelers.
