Dat Mui City: The southernmost tip of Vietnam, still little known to Thai people

When talking about Vietnam, many might think of Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, or Hoi An, but for me, mr.hotsia, visitingDat Mui City (Dat Mui)located in Ngoc Hien District, Cà Mau Province, is a very special experience because this is the southernmost point of Vietnam. It is the tip of the Cà Mau Peninsula, or to put it simply, it lies on the same latitude as Nakhon Si Thammarat Province in Thailand.

Many people may have never heard of this city before because Dat Mui is very small, with a population of less than 100,000, and almost no foreign tourists visit. I traveled here by passenger boat from Cà Mau city, taking almost until evening. Upon arrival, I immediately felt the atmosphere here was completely different from the big cities I had visited before.

Travel and Accommodation in Dat Mui City

Arriving at Dat Mui pier, I hired a local motorcycle to the southernmost point of the Cà Mau Peninsula, about 2 kilometers from the pier. The round-trip fare was about 60 baht. I toured around two or three spots along the coast. This tip is currently under development as a potential major tourist destination in the future, but for now, it remains very natural and simple.

Accommodation in Dat Mui City consists of only two small hotels serving Vietnamese guests, priced around 200 baht per night. Rooms have air conditioning and basic amenities, which are sufficient for travelers wanting to experience the real local lifestyle here.

Seaside Lifestyle and the Atmosphere of Dat Mui Pier

I enjoyed sitting and sipping coffee at a small shop right at the pier, watching small fishing boats pass by, some with unusual shapes. There were no tourists at all, and English was hardly spoken. Communication relied entirely on gestures and smiles.

At night, Dat Mui is very quiet with no chaotic city lights. Most locals cook and eat at home. There is one small noodle shop open, but beware of the many mosquitoes. For those wanting to experience this atmosphere, I recommend preparing for a bit of rough cleanliness.

Local Food and Flavors

Although Dat Mui is small and quiet, its fresh seafood is exceptional. I tried the grilled button squid, a famous southern Vietnamese seafood dish. The sweetness of the squid combined with the aroma of herbs and gentle grilling made a flavor I find hard to forget (if you want to see the detailed preparation, check outthe grilled button squid videofrom Vietnam).

Other dishes I tried in Cà Mau Province include Vietnamese chicken biryani, which has a mild and balanced flavor with spices that are not too strong, perfect for those who like homestyle tastes (I recommend watchingthe Vietnamese chicken biryani videoto enhance your eating experience). Also, there is Nem Thang, another local dish that impressed me greatly (watch the preparation atthe Vietnamese Nem Thang video).)

Connecting with Cà Mau Province: Experience Local Life and Fresh Markets

Talking about Dat Mui alone would be incomplete because it is part of Cà Mau Province, a province known for its Mekong riverside lifestyle and diverse seafood sources.Cà Mau Province Travel Informationthat I have written will help you get a clearer overall picture of this area.

If you travel from Cà Mau city to Dat Mui, you will pass the main passenger pier that serves as the key water transport hub in the province.Cà Mau Province Passenger PierThis is the pier I used to travel by boat from Rach Gia to Cà Mau, then transferred to another boat to Dat Mui. You can read the travel details inthe Cà Mau to Dat Mui boat articlethat I wrote.

Additionally, visitingCà Mau Fresh Marketis another experience not to be missed. This riverside market features large paddle boats and traditional boats used to transport local goods and fruits. I saw Cà Mau salted fish, which looks different from the salted fish in my hometown Bang Bo. This fish reminded me of the taste of home, but here the fish is not head-cut and is much drier.

Summary from mr.hotsia

Dat Mui is one of those destinations where I feel like I’m "traveling to discover" rather than just a comfortable tourist trip. There are no conveniences like in big cities, but what you gain is simplicity, the seaside local lifestyle, and a peace that is hard to find in today’s world.

If you enjoy traveling to explore and deeply experience local culture, Dat Mui is a very interesting choice. And if you want to experience fresh markets, Mekong riverside life, and fresh seafood, nearby Cà Mau Province has plenty more to discover.

For anyone planning a trip to southern Vietnam, I, mr.hotsia, recommend adding Dat Mui to your list. I guarantee you will have an experience different from typical tourist cities.
