Cruising by passenger boat from Ca Mau province to Can Tho city in the Mekong Delta

My journey starts in Ca Mau province, one of the southernmost provinces of Vietnam, where the Mekong River branches into thousands of canals forming the fertile area known as the Mekong Delta. The route I chose is traveling by passenger boat from Ca Mau to Can Tho, a major city in the heart of the Mekong Delta full of vibrant riverside life.

For those interested in more details about Ca Mau province, you can read more atCa Mau Province Travel Informationwhich I have previously shared. This province is notable as the southernmost city of Vietnam, with a canal system connecting to form the main transportation routes and an important seafood production area.

Starting at Ca Mau Pier

The pier I used to travel to Can Tho is a passenger pier located north of Ca Mau city, about 6 kilometers from the city center. For those who want the coordinates and details of the pier, you can checkCa Mau Boat Stationwhich I have previously recorded. The passenger boats on this route run twice daily: morning at 8:00 AM and afternoon at 1:00 PM. Tickets cost 120,000 dong, approximately 180 Thai baht, which is very worthwhile considering the experience.

Scenery Along the Way and Riverside Life

The boat I took was a medium-sized wooden boat, not a speedboat or luxury boat, but full of the charm of the main and tributary branches of the Mekong River. The journey took about 4 hours. The boat passed floating markets where locals enthusiastically sold their local products.

The floating market here is different from others as it remains traditional. Locals use boats to carry fresh fruits like pomelo, bananas, and various vegetables, including unhusked rice loaded by farmers and boat traders transporting goods by water constantly. Boats pass each other or dock to load charcoal, which is another traditional livelihood of riverside villagers with charcoal-making villages stretching for kilometers along the Mekong River.

I also saw a fuel station that is not a building or station but a small boat anchored in the middle of the river, providing refueling services to other boats. This scene truly reflects the lifestyle and ecosystem of waterway transportation.

Wide Curving River Branch to Can Tho

Towards the end of the boat trip, the boat enters a wide and expansive Mekong River branch. This is my favorite zone because the open scenery is filled with trees and small islets. The wide water surface feels peaceful and natural, making me almost reluctant to disembark.

When the boat arrives at the central pier in Can Tho city, it docks near the Ho Chi Minh monument. This spot is the city center connecting to the market and main streets of Can Tho. Arriving this way made me feel the connection between the two cities and the continuity of a lifestyle still linked to the river.

Why Choose to Travel by Boat?

Many might wonder why I chose to travel by boat instead of by car or bus from Ca Mau to Can Tho. Actually, the road route is more convenient and faster, but for me, traveling by boat is a rare experience that brings you closer to local life. You get to see floating markets, cargo boats, locals working along the canals, and experience an atmosphere you can't find on regular roads.

Moreover, soon this passenger boat service may reduce or stop operating. So if you enjoy slow travel, nature, and culture, I, mr.hotsia, recommend planning to cruise this route before the opportunity is gone.

Connecting with Local Life and Food

After disembarking in Can Tho, I recommend exploring the fresh market in the city center filled with fresh seafood and seasonal fruits. Vietnamese cuisine in the Mekong Delta has a unique character and balanced flavors, perfect for travelers wanting to taste authentic local flavors.

If you enjoy street food, I have written about the delicious Ca Mau-style hamburger, a unique recipe of this province. You can read more atCa Mau HamburgerFor those wanting to see the atmosphere of floating markets and riverside village life, you can revisitCa Mau Fresh Marketwhich will help you better understand the overall area.

Summary of the Journey with mr.hotsia

Cruising from Ca Mau to Can Tho was a very impressive journey for me because I saw the real life of locals who still deeply depend on and coexist with the Mekong River. A simple but warm lifestyle and the chance to see floating markets with various boats traveling all day long is a scene you can't get from traveling by car.

For travelers who enjoy tranquility, local lifestyles, and want to experience the Mekong Delta in its true dimension, I, mr.hotsia, wholeheartedly recommend this route. Don't forget to plan ahead as boat trips are limited and schedules may change seasonally.
