Travel by bus from Gia Lai to Kon Tum with mr.hotsia

I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to return to Kon Tum again in November 2013 after my first visit in December 2010. This time, I chose the route from Gia Lai, an important city on the Central Highlands of Vietnam. This province has a cool climate and beautiful nature. Traveling from Gia Lai to Kon Tum is an interesting route for travelers who want to experience authentic local life and atmosphere.

For this trip, I chose to use the local bus service departing from the old bus station near the main market in Gia Lai city. The buses here are not luxurious or modern like those in big cities, but they are the kind of local buses I really like because they are cheap and have no hidden fees. The bus leaves the station in the morning and takes about 2 hours to reach Kon Tum city. The actual distance on Google Earth is only about 50 kilometers.

Before boarding, I stopped to grab a snack at a roadside rice shop near the bus station because I knew that buses on interprovincial routes like this do not provide food service. The roadside vendor also sold ripe bananas. The aroma of hot rice and sweet bananas prepared me for a journey that might not be as comfortable as a luxury tour bus.

Atmosphere along the way and important stops

The route from Gia Lai to Kon Tum is quite peaceful. The bus passes small villages and lush green rice fields. At one point during the trip, I saw coffee beans drying in front of a local house. The coffee aroma wafted through the bus window, creating a rare atmosphere not found in big cities. It was a simple scene that truly reflected rural Vietnamese life.

The bus stops to pick up and drop off passengers at various points, especially at the Gia Lai market, which is the main stop. As a tourist, I got to fully experience the daily life of the locals. This type of bus does not charge extra fees based on luggage weight and does not overcharge like vans or long-distance buses I have encountered on many routes. This kind of travel is charming because of its honesty and fair pricing.

Arriving at Kon Tum, a charming small riverside town

When the bus arrives in Kon Tum, it stops at the market in the city center, which is next to the Kon Tum River. There are small hotels serving tourists nearby, so no need to travel far. I recommend staying around here for convenience in exploring the town and tasting local food.

Kon Tum province features mountainous terrain and dense forests. It has diverse indigenous cultures that still preserve traditional ways of life in an interesting way. If you visit this province, don’t miss the chance to explore the local market and try unique local dishes.

Connecting travel experiences between Gia Lai and Kon Tum

For those who enjoy in-depth travel, I recommend tryingExploring Pleiku city, Gia Lai on your ownwhich is the capital of Gia Lai province. Here you will find a colorful morning market and local dishes worth tasting such asUa liquor and Pleiku-style grilled chickenat Go Nia restaurant, which was a very memorable experience for me.

Also, if you are interested in accommodation in southern Vietnam, the Nha Trang Bus Station (Nha Trang Bus station) is an important travel connection point and allows convenient planning for continuous trips.

Summary of the trip and recommendations from mr.hotsia

Traveling by local bus from Gia Lai to Kon Tum is an experience I, mr.hotsia, want to recommend to travelers who enjoy deep exploration. Besides being economical, it allows you to truly experience local life, not just pass through by bus.

Don’t forget to bring snacks for the journey because local buses like this do not provide food service. And if you like coffee, don’t miss the coffee bean drying yards you see along the way, which left a lasting impression on me.
